A to Z ~ Beggar's Opera, the

This year my A to Z theme harks back to 2012's theme, in which I listed an A-to-Z of books from my GoodReads "TBR" shelf. This year I want to revisit that list and report on which ones I've read, and what rating I gave them. Where the book hasn't been read, I'll mention other books starting with that letter I have read since 2012. ;)

"B" ... THE BEGGAR'S OPERA
Status: Read

Brief Review: At first while I was reading this I was a bit 'meh' about it, but then when Jones started to crack the mystery and there was a chance of her getting Ellis off his charges, I started to get more interested in the story. I am not really sure what it was that made it 'meh' at first, but it was almost too depressing or something. And it's not even that depressing a story, even if it has a couple of very sad aspects to it. The humour in the book is kind of old school detective, or maybe just old school in general. All in all, I enjoyed this read, though I didn't know if I would ever feel compelled to read it again. >> Full review

Some of my fave "B" books read:

Backworlds, the (Book 1) - M. Pax. 5 stars.
Become (Desolation, #1) - Ali Cross. 4 stars.
Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs, the - Irvine Welsh. 4 stars.
Bestest. Ramadan. Ever. - Medeia Sharif. 4 stars.
Bitter Like Orange Peel - Jessica Bell. 5 stars.
Bone Collector, the - Jeffery Deaver. 4 stars.
Bullitt - Robert L. Pike. 4 stars.

  1. I haven't heard of this one. Backworlds is awesome and I've got Medeia's book on my list.

  2. Interesting. I am afraid if I had found a book "meh" I would stop reading then and there. It has to draw me in and grab me. It has to keep me there or I just don't usually waste my time. ♥

  3. I usually give a book about fifty pages to entice me. If it's written by an author I like, I might give it more. Loved MPax's Backworlds. I've never heard of the Beggar's Opera, the name reminded me of the really old ThreePenny Opera.

  4. i love your chart, below! my, you have started a lot of novels! I have mine in individual notebooks. Until they get on the computer, they don't get much editing attention, and if they get edited, they should be going somewhere... should!

and i love your a to z theme - a quick review of books! perfect for me always looking for a good read!

    happy b day!

    1. I really love the idea of having a notebook just for one particular story, even if it's just got notes and stuff on that story. But yeah, I do like a colour-coded chart. :P

  5. I hate when I don't connect with a book right away - I find it hard to push through!

  6. I think I heard of this book before, but have never read it. And probably won't after your review of the "meh" factor.

  13. Hi Trisha, It's so hard to read posts like these and see a bunch more books I'd like to add to my TBR list. The toughest moment of my childhood was when I realized I'd never be able to read all the books in the world. It still upsets me when I think about it.

  14. You have read a lot of books! I feel like such a slacker. I've read Medeia's book. I think that's all from the list.

  15. H Trisha .. I haven't heard of A Beggar's Opera, other than the opera .. but not sure I'll pick that one up - but Bitter Like Orange Peel and Backworlds are two I definitely want to read ..
