Bloody Mary(s)

(NaBloWriMo) I don't have much experience with Bloody Mary drinks, but I do have one particular fond memory:

I also clearly recall the SUPERNATURAL episode titled "Bloody Mary" - scary stuff! Naturally, though, the SUPERNATURAL dudes weren't the inventors of this myth.

According to the ever-reliable Wikipedia: "Bloody Mary is a ghost or witch featured in English folklore. She is said to appear in a mirror when her name is called three times or sometimes more while in a dark room, depending upon the version of the story, often as part of a game or dare."

She's also a crazy mean old Queen from English history - Mary Tudor was her name.

What do you think of when you hear the words Bloody Mary?

  1. I think of the drink but I recall that Supernatural episode. It was pretty good. Also in the commercial for Paranormal Activity 3 some kids play the bloody mary game. It looks pretty frightening.

  2. I think of Mary Mary, Quite Contrary, because I think the nursery rhyme was written about Mary Tudor. Oh and Worcester sauce, yum, yum.

  3. @Michael - yeah, I liked that episode. But then, I like most of 'em. hehe. I haven't heard of that Paranormal Activity show...I assume it's a show?? I don't watch TV presently, so I hardly ever see ads for anything.

@Deborah - I had forgotten about that! thanks for the reminder.

  4. Interesting bit of folklore. I could tell you what I think of when I hear the phrase Bloody Mary, but then, you'd think I'm perverted. ;)

  5. I think of the mirror dare, but I had a night when they didn't sit well with me. I was at a friend's, so it was pretty embarassing...
Paranormal Activity is a horror movie series, currently on it's third installment.

  6. It's funny how much Bloody Mary has been coming up in my life lately. And unfortunately it is not the drink. The mirror Bloody Mary story has been going around the elementary school here and as a result, my nine-year-old will not go anywhere in the house alone.
I saw the commercial for Paranormal Activity which terrified me because I remember the story when I was young.
Sigh...I think I need the Bloody Mary drink!

  7. I have never had a Bloody Mary and since I don't like tomato juice I probably never will. Bloody Mary mostly makes me think of Mary Tudor I think... I have a bit of a fascination with the Tudors, Anne Boleyn, etc.

  8. I hadn't thought of the Bloody Mary 'mirror' thing for a very long time. We used to do it as kids, not sure we ever saw her. I'd remember that right?

Now as for the drink... it's been a while, but as I do recall...nummy.

  9. @J.L. - Now I have certain visions in my mind...which I shall not share here. :) Just so you know, I'm more than likely just as perverted! hehe

@Will - yeah, I'm not really superstitious, but I think I'd still find that dare pretty eerie!

@Halli - oh dear, I didn't realise it was having a resurgence! Hope your daughter feels better soon.

@Danette - wow, I LOVE tomato juice! I don't really know why, I just love it! And yeah, the Tudors are pretty fascinating... Their stories make me glad I live in this time, not theirs.

    @Judie - I'm pretty sure you'd remember, yep! hehe

  10. I always think of the drink first, because it's one of my faves! I don't watch Supernatural because it grossed me out too much, but my husband watches it faithfully, and I did happen to see the Bloody Mary episode (thanks for the reminder Trisha. I'll probably have nightmares tonight). Okay, deep breaths, concentrate on the drink. Yum!

  11. Vicki, I agree there's a lot to be grossed out by in that show. But luckily I've never been freaked out by that kind of thing. Gratuitous violence or gore on the other hand, I'm not a fan of!

But yeah, I love the drink too. hehe
