A-Z blogging challenge "F" - Fremantle

I was tempted to write about Firefly, and I even briefly considered the Foo Fighters, but then I had the brilliant (ha) flash of inspiration that led me to settle on Fremantle instead. I work right in "Freo", as locals call it, a stone's throw from the Esplanade in one direction and the Roundhouse in another. I'm a south-of-the-river girl and proud of it!

Anyway, here's some information about good ole Freo for your knowledge-ingesting pleasure (that sounds kind of gross, doesn't it?!).

Fremantle is about 20-30 mins drive from Perth's city centre, and is one of three main "centres" in the city region - the third being Joondalup way up north. Fremantle is known for its hippies, but it also features some bikies (when I was a pizza delivery chick I delivered pizza to one of the famous bikie gangs near Freo) and, of course, professionals like me! The University of Notre Dame Australia is to the Western end of "old Fremantle", not far from the Roundhouse. Café 55 is where I get my morning coffee, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting!

The great thing about working in Freo (apart from how pretty it is) is that you have so many awesome pubs/other eateries to choose from when buying lunch. My colleagues and I go out once a week to Little Creatures Brewery (or somewhere else if the mood takes us). Little Creatures is kind of famous around Australia. People come from interstate to gawk at the original brewery across the Esplanade in Freo.

Some pictures of mine from around the Freo area:

And finally I must mention my footy team, the Fremantle Dockers (yes, this is a 2010 poster but I haven't seen a 2011 one yet :D).

Gotta love a man who wears purple!

  1. Nice photos. The geography lesson was interesting as was the bit about the society. Someday I hope I can make it to your country.

Contrary to my usual practice of subscribing to comments, to save time during this early part of the challenge I will not be doing so at this time. If you want to respond to my comment, please email me directly from your email notification for the comment.
Thanks. And I truly appreciate your efforts.

  2. Nice pictures. What's the thing you're taking a picture through in the third one? I like taking pictures like that. The hole through whatever makes a nice frame.

  3. Dan - it was a bus stop hole :P

  6. I loved my little trip to Freo. WA is the only state I haven't travelled all over. This is great. Well, and those Dockers docked our Lions recently. Boo!

    Thanks for coming to Eire.

  7. Yes, but to make up for that (sort of) they lost this last week ;)

    J.L., thanks.

I forgot to mention in my post that a lot of people accidentally spell it Freemantle too. They are WRONG! :P

  8. Lovely pics, Trisha! I've always thought Perth would be a great city to live in. Isn't Fremantle one of the ports where the America's Cup was held?

  9. I'm glad you answered Dan's question because I also was curious how you shot that photo. Great framing! Loved your charcoal drawings below--especially the one of the man. The look in his eyes is so intense, as if he is trying to figure out a great mystery!

  10. Charlotte, yes it was - but that was a while back :D

Randi - thanks! and glad you like my charcoal pix. The man was Kurt Cobain, so really I cheated with that one - copied from a picture. hehe

  12. Interesting post.
Isn't Fremantle the name of some of the Borrowers in Mary Norton's novel? :O)

  21. Oh, how interesting. I know a little about a few parts of Australia--have friends in and around Melbourne, Sidney... a very close friend near Adelaide (Go Crows!), but I don't know much about West Australia. It's beautiful!

  22. I've never been to Australia. But someone told me once that the water in the toilet swirls in the opposite direction.

  34. I'd never heard of Fremantle. Thanks for teaching me. Beautiful photos. Purple is my favorite color, so I think it's the perfect for a team.

  37. Foo Fighters, huh?

Someone already asked about the "hole" shot that was very interesting. One time, I took a photo of my daughter watching cookies bake and caught her reflection. I'll have to repost that some day.

I'm assuming "Footies" means soccer? (I'm from USA)

You made a comment about Kurt Kobain, but I don't see the charcoal? Was it originally on your blog background?
