A-Z blogging challenge "F" - Fremantle
I was tempted to write about Firefly, and I even briefly considered the Foo Fighters, but then I had the brilliant (ha) flash of inspiration that led me to settle on Fremantle instead. I work right in "Freo", as locals call it, a stone's throw from the Esplanade in one direction and the Roundhouse in another. I'm a south-of-the-river girl and proud of it!
Anyway, here's some information about good ole Freo for your knowledge-ingesting pleasure (that sounds kind of gross, doesn't it?!).
Fremantle is about 20-30 mins drive from Perth's city centre, and is one of three main "centres" in the city region - the third being Joondalup way up north. Fremantle is known for its hippies, but it also features some bikies (when I was a pizza delivery chick I delivered pizza to one of the famous bikie gangs near Freo) and, of course, professionals like me! The University of Notre Dame Australia is to the Western end of "old Fremantle", not far from the Roundhouse. Café 55 is where I get my morning coffee, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting!
The great thing about working in Freo (apart from how pretty it is) is that you have so many awesome pubs/other eateries to choose from when buying lunch. My colleagues and I go out once a week to Little Creatures Brewery (or somewhere else if the mood takes us). Little Creatures is kind of famous around Australia. People come from interstate to gawk at the original brewery across the Esplanade in Freo.
Some pictures of mine from around the Freo area:
And finally I must mention my footy team, the Fremantle Dockers (yes, this is a 2010 poster but I haven't seen a 2011 one yet :D).
Gotta love a man who wears purple!

Nice photos. The geography lesson was interesting as was the bit about the society. Someday I hope I can make it to your country.
ReplyDeleteContrary to my usual practice of subscribing to comments, to save time during this early part of the challenge I will not be doing so at this time. If you want to respond to my comment, please email me directly from your email notification for the comment.
Thanks. And I truly appreciate your efforts.

Nice pictures. What's the thing you're taking a picture through in the third one? I like taking pictures like that. The hole through whatever makes a nice frame.
ReplyDeleteDan - it was a bus stop hole :P
ReplyDeleteThe pics are great. I appreciate the geography lesson myself.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rusty :D
ReplyDeleteFist time I've heard of the Fremantle. Cool pics of the night lights.
ReplyDeleteI loved my little trip to Freo. WA is the only state I haven't travelled all over. This is great. Well, and those Dockers docked our Lions recently. Boo!
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming to Eire.

Yes, but to make up for that (sort of) they lost this last week ;)
ReplyDeleteJ.L., thanks.
I forgot to mention in my post that a lot of people accidentally spell it Freemantle too. They are WRONG! :P
Lovely pics, Trisha! I've always thought Perth would be a great city to live in. Isn't Fremantle one of the ports where the America's Cup was held?

I'm glad you answered Dan's question because I also was curious how you shot that photo. Great framing! Loved your charcoal drawings below--especially the one of the man. The look in his eyes is so intense, as if he is trying to figure out a great mystery!
ReplyDeleteCharlotte, yes it was - but that was a while back :D
ReplyDeleteRandi - thanks! and glad you like my charcoal pix. The man was Kurt Cobain, so really I cheated with that one - copied from a picture. hehe
I managed to visit Fremantle once a long while ago. I'd love to visit again.
ReplyDeleteInteresting post.
ReplyDeleteIsn't Fremantle the name of some of the Borrowers in Mary Norton's novel? :O)
Funny, when I was traveling all my Aussie friends I met on the way were from Perth! Also, when I lived in London. Anyways, great pix of Fremantle!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos!
ReplyDeleteAlways nice to get a glimpse of another country. Thanks for dropping in on thefeatherednest.
ReplyDeleteWow, that first photo looks a little like Oxford in the UK! I've never been anywhere in WA, but I would love to one day.
ReplyDeleteInteresting post, something new I learned. And I love the pictures!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog, and for your kind comment :-)
Doris
Thanks for stopping by to visit! Great post. I have a friend who lives in the Perth area. Would love to go visit her sometime.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Nice to meet you on A to Z!
ReplyDeleteThanks all who stopped by! :D
ReplyDeleteMy brother-in-law is from Perth and he's always telling us to go there, when there, I should visit this place.
ReplyDeleteOh, how interesting. I know a little about a few parts of Australia--have friends in and around Melbourne, Sidney... a very close friend near Adelaide (Go Crows!), but I don't know much about West Australia. It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Australia. But someone told me once that the water in the toilet swirls in the opposite direction.
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Australia, but might consider going for a visit one day.
ReplyDeleteYes. A visit. Promise.
Love,
A South African.

Very cool- I love reading about new places :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a wonderful place. Hope to see it some day. Thanks for schooling me! :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures! Sounds like a very interesting, fun place to live - and visit!
ReplyDeleteLots of interesting "F" stuff here. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Cheers!
As a New Yorker who has never been to Australia, I loved reading about Freo. Keep it coming!

Great pictures! It was so interesting to learn more about Australia.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting on my blog. :)
Great pictures/info. As an American, it's easy to not know a lot about Ausieland in general.
ReplyDeleteDamn. When's the next flight there? I want to go!
ReplyDeleteEllie Garratt
Fremantle sounds wonderful. I will definitely have to stop there if I ever get to Australia. The photos are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post. I love geography, but I know pathetically little about Australia. Now I know a little more.
ReplyDeleteDan
I'd never heard of Fremantle. Thanks for teaching me. Beautiful photos. Purple is my favorite color, so I think it's the perfect for a team.
ReplyDeleteFrom the pictures and your nice words seems a lovely place, who might know ... my catches me very far.
ReplyDeleteHehe, to everyone who wants to visit, come on down! :P
ReplyDeleteFoo Fighters, huh?
ReplyDeleteSomeone already asked about the "hole" shot that was very interesting. One time, I took a photo of my daughter watching cookies bake and caught her reflection. I'll have to repost that some day.
I'm assuming "Footies" means soccer? (I'm from USA)
You made a comment about Kurt Kobain, but I don't see the charcoal? Was it originally on your blog background?

Hi there - my Kurt Cobain pic was in the "C" post, where I put up charcoal pictures of mine.
ReplyDeleteAnd "footy" is Australian Rules Football :)
That was interesting. One day I will go to Australia. I don't promise to visit Fremantle. ~Miriam
