A-Z blogging challenge "U" - Ursula

Okay, so there are a few Ursulas out there that I want to mention, and they are...

  • Ursula le Guin - I have not actually read her Earthsea series, but a few references lately have really made me want to add them to my TBR list! So I am going to, right now in fact, at GoodReads :D
  • Ursula the Sea Witch - The Little Mermaid. Recently Charlotte Jane Ivory wrote a story for The Chrysalis Experiment in which she wrote from King Triton's perspective after losing his daughter Ariel. Of course she was inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen version of The Little Mermaid, which I haven't read yet. Another thing to add to my TBR list!!
  • Ursula - from one of my old short stories, in which a group of teenagers go hiking in the woods and get caught in a landslide that kills 5
  • Ursula Pamela Buffay, Phoebe's twin sister in Friends - heh
  • Ursula Andress, Swiss actress and so-called "quintessential Bond girl"

And that's the only Ursulas I can think of! Who am I missing?

  2. Since the books were mentioned in "The Jane Austen Book Club" in particular, I've been meaning to get my hands on them :D As if I don't already have enough to read...

  3. I didn't realize there were so many! It's such an interesting name, though. There should be more.

  4. I've only known one real-life Ursula, but it sure is a lot of name to live up to, isn't it. You can't have the name and have a small personality.

  5. I don't think I've known anyone in person called Ursula. But I would have to agree on the personality thing Hart!

Liz, agreed! I think it's a cool name, it conjures all sorts of interesting ideas in my head for some reason.

  7. And to think it only took me about 5 mins to compile the list :D I admit I did find some in a Google search. hehe

  8. It's a tough letter to find names for but you did an amazing job!

Ursula le Guin is probably the finest female science fiction writer ever.

  10. For some reason, Ursula makes me think of Saint Ursula although I'm not sure why or what Ursula was "in charge" of per hagiographical research.

I like the Latin meaning of Ursula, small female bear. We've all heard how loyal and protective female bears are. :)

  11. @Ellie - yet one more person speaking in favour of her books! I really must read her :D

@LB - I look forward to being inspired myself. :)

@VR - I haven't heard of Saint Ursula, but Google just told me she's a British Canadian saint. Also, I like the meaning of the name! I didn't know that before. Cheers :D

  15. I own and have read the first Eartsea book. It had a pretty original concept and the feel of a fantasy novel.

    Warning: Nerd Alert
That makes sense. There's a Pokemon (see told you) that resembles a bear and it's name is Teddiursa.
