The A-to-Z blogging challenge of 2013 is going on, and today we're up to "F". My theme for 2013 is an A-to-Z list of classic Aussie tunes - either classic or just plain songs I like. For today's song I've chosen:
Eskimo Joe are another band from my hometown who have done fairly well nation-wide. Their biggest hit to date has been "Black Fingernails, Red Wine", though I still kind of think of them as they were when their first single, "Sweater", was released back in the 90s. I'm not really a huge fan of this band, to be honest, but I think this song is great. And not just 'cause it's meant to be a homage to the "Freo Doctor".
Honourable mentions:
- Face Down by Ammonia
- Feels Like A Demon, Friends in Danger & For A Second by Magic Dirt
- Flame Trees by Cold Chisel
- Famous by Jessica Bell
- Foreign Lover by Stonefield (originally Iotah)
- Forever And a Day by the Dissociatives
- Freefall by Motor Ace
- Fucken Awesome by Spiderbait (original vid avec censored lyrics)
- Furious by Fini Scad
Never heard of this band. Thanks for sharing.

Super-cool, I really like their sound. I work with music all day, but rarely have time to stop and just listen. In the car I *gasp* rely on the old fashioned car stereo to get me from point A to point B. I live in the States but close to Canada, and the Canadian stations play great music, but not enough from Australia! Can't wait to check out more of the tunes you post during the A to Z!

Really great tune, first time I've heard of them.
ReplyDeleteAlways nice discovering new music - thanks for sharing. -Belinda [A - Z participant].
ReplyDeleteSnappy Tune! Me likes!! :)
ReplyDeleteVery Cool to be introduced to all these bands.. Thanks Trisha....
ReplyDeleteWhy it sounds familiar to me? I never learn the name of the bands and sometimes not even the title of the songs but this sounds familiar. I like it.
ReplyDeleteI like how you included a song by Jessica Bell in your list. I haven't heard the song by Eskimo Joe but I like it.
ReplyDeleteOh, I like this one. Keep'em coming.
ReplyDeleteFun fun!
ReplyDeleteHuh. Never heard of them. :) Thanks for educating me!
ReplyDeleteNever heard of this band before. Thanks for the introduction.
ReplyDeleteFun song, thanks for introducing me to it.
ReplyDeleteEskimo Joe is a great name for a band. Another new one for me.
ReplyDeleteI really like them! Their name makes me think of the shirts at Eskimo Joe's. haha.
ReplyDeleteLove your A to Z theme! I really like this song and will be taking notes this month on new tunes to catch. Thank you! Kathleen
ReplyDeleteI look forward to this daily introduction to "new" music. :)
ReplyDeleteNow I'm not sure if I don't know these songs because I live in the UK or because I'm too old!! Thanks or the visit.

Aussie tunes - love it!
ReplyDeleteGreat song! Never heard of them before, but I like their sound.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta and it takes place in Australia. Cold Chisel was one of the bands mentioned and I was curious about them, but hadn't looked them up. Funny enough, an American singer who got repeated several times was Kenny Rogers, who hadn't been in the spotlight for years (decades).
ReplyDeleteIt made me wonder how much American music (and TV/movies) filtrate into Australian culture. Lots? Or just a little? We don't hear a lot about Australian music, at least where I live, but I'm a long way from Australia.
I actually have that book on my TBR ready to be read at some point :) We do get a lot of American music here, in fact it'd mostly be American I would say. We get a lot of our own local sounds as well, of course, but American music is very dominant here as well. I think we get a lot of music from around the world, but American artists would probably be the majority of what we hear.
DeleteI was in Australia in 1983 and still have a pile of LP's from those days, bands like The Reels, Meo 245, The Digites, Eurogliders, Crossfire and a few others. I loved the music around then.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the journey to Z

I think it is great that you are showing things that are cool about Australia that us "foreigners" might not know about. I'm also digging on your wallpaper. :O)
ReplyDeleteDon't know any of your picks today, but I like the Eskimo Joe song. Great job with the first week of the Challenge.
ReplyDeleteI love it! and I probably never would have heard of it before if it wasn't for you sharing so thank you.
ReplyDeleteI really like Eskimo Joe song and video. Great music!

A neat theme that fits your genre of writing so well. The Eskimo Joe song's message escaped me, but I like the tune and the water sycronized dance. Thanks for stopping by The LoneStar Quilting Bee.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!
ReplyDeleteI like that one. You don't see a lot of videos with synchronized swimmers, either.
ReplyDeleteSometimes local bands really are good!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a teenager, I was obsessed with Australia. Alas, I ended up in the USA. I love the fact you give homage to bands from your home.
ReplyDeleteha! I love that song. It's been a while...
ReplyDeleteI've heard of Eskimo Joe! I'm going to listen to it right now. Great theme for the A-Z for us at the other end of the world :-)
ReplyDeleteI rather like Eskimo Joe. Saw them support The Offspring once, this was back in the Sweater days. Good fun.
ReplyDeleteGirl is probably my favourite album, but I do rather enjoy this song. I rock it on Singstar too!
For me, Flame Trees tops it though!
