During April a bunch of bloggers are participating in the A-to-Z blogging challenge of 2013. My theme for 2013 is an A-to-Z list of classic Aussie tunes - either classic or just plain songs I like. Today's letter is "R", and I'm so looking forward to a break tomorrow (Sunday)! But anyway, onto my "R" song choices:
Australian Crawl, fronted by James Reyne, were pretty big in the first half of the 80s, but broke up in 1986. For a band so short-lived and whose last album really didn't do well at all, their earlier hits have stood the test of time. "Reckless" is possibly my favourite song by them, though I also love the other obvious choices, "Downhearted" and "Hoochie Gucci Fiorucci Mama". As for the Sleepy Jackson, who are another group from my hometown, I admit I don't know them too well, but "Rain Falls For Wind" is a fabulous song. Their breakthrough single was "Good Dancers" which is also gorgeous in a slightly more "sugary sweet" way. In fact, it brings the word "adorabubble" to mind. 'Cause, you know, that's a word.
Honourable mentions:
- Railroad Song by Abbe May
- Rain by I Can't Believe It's Not Rock
- Ramona Was A Waitress by Paul Dempsey (Something For Kate)
- Reckless by San Cisco
- Red Right Hand by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
- Refujesus by the Decline
- Relapse by Little Birdy
- Repeat by Grinspoon
- Rock 'n' Roll Outlaw by Rose Tattoo (official vid)
- Rock Boys by the Grates
- Roll Credit by Something For Kate
- Rose Thorns by Effigy
- Running Back (feat. Flo Rida) by Jessica Mauboy
Fun theme! Sadly I don't know any of those songs. I guess that goes to show what a wide variety of music our world has. :)
ReplyDeleteI know there is plenty out there I don't know yet either :) I always love to hear new (to me) music!
DeleteI like Rain Falls for Wind.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard those either so thank you for sharing them.
ReplyDeleteBy diverse means (often augmented via son/daughter!) I have quite a large and eclectic stack of music - but here I find a whole area of performers I've not come across before! ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the introduction to them - and thanks for stopping by my blog earlier, too. I hope you're enjoying the A-Z blog-hop!
SueH I refuse to go quietly!

I like "Reckless," although I'd not heard of the band...in fact, Nick Cave and Rose Tattoo were the only band on your "R" list I am familiar with.
ReplyDeleteBut that's how one discovers new music!
These are also new to me, and I enjoyed them both!
ReplyDeleteJulie
Both are new to me; like Reckless best (and movie clip). I've learned so much about Australia in the A-Z! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLiked both of these, but I really loved Reckless!
ReplyDeleteInteresting post Trisha - my knowledge of Aussie music is a bit rudimentary, INXS, Midnight Oil and Kylie etc. Good to find some stuff the locals know.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is quite a list of R songs! Hope you enjoy your day off!

Hi Trisha, It is so amazing the diversity in the A to Z challenge. I have never heard of any of the songs on your list since I am unfamiliar with Australian musicians. Fun word too, "adorabubble!" God bless, Maria from Delight Directed Living
ReplyDeleteI always am discovering new songs on your page, which is quite fun. I like the one Australian Crawl Reckless.
ReplyDeleteHadn't heard these before, I liked them. Thanks for sharing.

I've never heard of them before, but your blogpost gave me the opportunity to learn and discover something new. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteSleep Jackson sounds a little David Bowie-ish, not a bad thing!

ReplyDeleteI actually have heard of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds before. :)
ReplyDeleteI love new (to me) music, and I really liked Reckless. As far as the list goes, I recognize Nick Cave and Effigy. I clearly have some serious studying to do!
ReplyDeleteVR Barkowski
Never heard of either one at my sea, nice picks though and pffft no break for me.
ReplyDeleteSo much music I've never heard of before, a whole continent's worth in fact!
ReplyDeleteIt's fun how many bands are from your home town!
ReplyDeleteLoved the Reckless video, another new song for me.
Whew! That first song made me sleepy. I could do with a Sunday nap... :)
ReplyDeleteReckless... what a beautiful song. There was something about it that almost brought me to tears. Maybe it was the words... throw down your guns.
ReplyDeleteI know just what you mean! It is pretty moving, particularly these days.
DeleteI am from sunny Mumbai... but very intresteing to know so much about music from Australia.. Happy to connect. I am now following you via A to Z Challenge . Do feel free to drop by my blog Wilderness at www.disha-doshi.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm from the Philippines...very interesting list of songs with titles beginning with R..
ReplyDeleteReckless is best, without a doubt!
ReplyDeleteAnd I have to put it out there. River of Tears. Kev Carmody song, but covered by The Drones. The live version is so much better than the album version. (I may have a crush on their bass player)

I'm seeing lots of Effigy come up too! I really only know the one song, I Give In, sent to me on a mixtape by a girl from Perth many years ago. :D
