ABNA & other

• I entered ABNA with SUNDOWN II (latest revision), but with new title. The story was set during the Sundown Music Festival, a fictional festival, but now the setting has changed, so I need a new title. But a permanent title is a dilemma for another day.
• Next project (decided on a slight whim) = revise DAPHNE II. It's NA, but I'm not sure what else. Not romance, but with romantic elements. Women's fiction? It seems more like...general contemp. "General" though feels like a bit of a cop-out.
• I always struggle with genre labelling. Is this because I don't know my stories well enough? I thought so, but maybe I just don't understand genres. Do I need to attend genre school?
• The is a year of revision (I hope). I'm already committed to BuNo and NaNo for writing new stuff (though possibly I will do rewrites). The ludicrous thought of working on RAGEWATER has occurred to me. But...I dunno. Daunting. But I do love this vast realm of possibility!

Inspiring Sounds

In other news, here is the first bit of music I want to share this year:


Kauan is a band I found on Last.fm. Of unknown origin (except that I'm pretty sure they're from Earth), they are currently Anton Belov (guitar, vocals, keys and programming) and Lyubov Mushnikova (violin). Somebody on Last.fm asked, "Are they Russians that sing Finnish?" You can download "Föhn" for free, courtesy of the band. So what is it that I love about this music? Well, I guess it makes me think of some magical land where all sorts of haunting things are happening. I also saw someone on YouTube mention they were listening to it while watching a snowfall outside (jealous! we never have snow where I live!). It's interesting, too, because I don't understand the lyrics, so I can't dwell on them. Usually for me, meaningful lyrics are a must, so this is a different experience.

I've been listening to this song A LOT in the last week. Matryoshka are an amazing (Japanese, despite the Russian name) two-member band I found via Last.fm (to which I am addicted), and who provide the public with a heap of their music for freeeeeee (yes, freeeeee!) on that site. Their album ZATRACENIE is one of the most glorious collections of sound I have heard in my life, and you can get bits and pieces of it for free, straight from the band. Check this band out here.

But you know what? I didn't post that yesterday! And I haven't posted anything since the 29th of July. That's over a week ago! You see, people, I believe I have lost my blogging mojo. But at least I'm distracted by all the right things - working feverishly on a rewrite of SUNDOWN, which I am enjoying a whole heap. It's not on my Goals list, but oh well, at least I'm doing something creative, right? And I do still have my other goals on the table.

I also know that I have been kind of out of touch with you, my fellow bloggers. But I've realised that I do go through ebbs and flows on this blog, and I'm okay with it. Just as long as you know that I will be back in fine form and repaying you for all your commenting kindness at some point. :)

Lately, life has been a little bit crazy. I've had family visiting, and I've been travelling. And in the last week, for various reasons (including a *gasp* 32nd birthday!), I haven't had a single night totally at home. Thankfully things should calm down now, 'cause though I love my friends and family (and...work?), I sure do crave my "me" time when I don't get enough of it.


I'm also currently grappling with the disappointing reality that is my shiny new MacBook Pro. Okay, I'm not disappointed by the laptop itself - not at all; it's delightful...except when I mess with permissions and suddenly can't find any of my files in Finder - but I'm very disappointed with iPhoto. On my old laptop it was at least serviceable, and I could at least find my photos when I searched for them on my computer. In this latest version of iPhoto, it seems they're just not having that. But I won't rant anymore, 'cause it's pretty boring.

I'm still working on my rewrite of SUNDOWN, and enjoying it a lot. But I haven't done much in this last week of madness. Hopefully from here on in I won't have any more weeks where none of my evenings are entirely my own. I do hope to get to work on a first revision of DANNA, 'cause I think it's one of my more promising works.

In recent times The Smashing Pumpkins brought out a new album, Oceania, and kicked off a tour (I attended the show in my town this Thursday just gone). I've been listening to Oceania a lot. But for the last few days I've been newly addicted to a song by Lacuna Coil called "Daylight Dancer". It's from their album Comalies, which apparently is coming up on its 10 year anniversary. There's talk of a tour where they play the album in its entirety. I'd love to see that show, though I'd prefer to see a show where they played the entirety of the previous album Unleashed Memories live. ;)

BuNoWriMo [Days 1-3], and a haunting tune

BuNoWriMo has begun!! For anyone who doesn't know yet, it's basically another national novel writing month, but one run by the folks at the Burrow. I've added a word counter widget to my "Goals" page, so you can see how I'm doing on word count. But for the record, I'm at about 5,200 words as of the end of Day 3, and that's basically me being right on schedule. I've also got within less than one chapter of finishing my edits on FIRE!! I'm so excited at the prospect of getting that done at last. I'm going to do it before bed tonight, just 'cause I want it done. I will do a proper report on how I went with that later.

For now, I need to post this while it's still Day 3, and still Sunday (i.e. Sunday Session below). I have 2 minutes. ;)

In other news, it's Sunday, and time for another Session! Below is the song I've listened to most in the last week. Porcupine Tree's "Blackest Eyes", which I've always found kind of haunting, and after I looked up the song's meaning I found out why! But basically I think this song rocks at being inspirational when it comes to writing dark, dark stories. It's not exactly a depressing tune, in fact it kind of strikes me as blackly magical. But yeah, it's haunting.

Book review: RETRIBUTION by Jilliane Hoffman

Note: This review is taken from the GoodReads spoilerific version and stripped of spoilers, for public consumption.

It took me 7 and a bit days to finish this crime/thriller/whatever you wanna call it, which generally speaking for me is quite quick (I'm a slow reader). This book was not only easily consumed but, at times, hard to put down. Not only were we watching the present-day story of grisly murder play out, but we were also seeing main character C.J.'s own personal story unfold (or at least we were waiting to see what lay in her future as a result of her traumatic past). The two stories were, after all, intertwined.

RETRIBUTION was Jilliane Hoffman's debut novel, and I think she did a really good job. The psycho characters were maybe a little bit two dimensional - super crazy and scary, for sure, but with no apparent reason for being so. Being given no explanatory background for either character, I find that I'm still curious about how they turned out like they did. But then, some people are just born a certain way, right? Twisted, scary and basically nuts.

In general, I tended to have pretty strong feelings about Hoffman's characters - some of them I hated with a great passion, some I wanted to slap, and others I was cheering on with enthusiasm. As for main character C.J., I found myself at some moments saying, "Yeah, you go girl!" and at others muttering incredulously, "OMG, what are you doing? No! Stop!" And I guess that's how I like it. A tormented, imperfect main character makes things lots more interesting.

I gave this book 4/5 stars at GoodReads, 'cause while it's not a sheer mind-blowing 5, I didn't really have anything to criticise it for. And on the GoodReads note, I still haven't really figured out a proper rating system. Someday, I'll get there. ;)




In other news, it's Sunday, and so time for a Sunday Session in which I share with you the song I've been listening to the most in the last week! I received the new Silversun Pickups album in the mail early in the week, and have been listening ever since. Early impressions are it's a gorgeous album full of great wonders, but the song I've listened to most so far is the following:






I'm eagerly awaiting a video clip to see what these guys have done! Meanwhile, I'll mention that the song is about a friend of Brian Aubert's who had a horrible childhood but has overcome it and is prospering now. I think that's just awesome, and so is this band. Can't wait to see them live in concert again! Last time they put on a show that was one of my favourites of all time.

Goal update, random pics, and some music

Another week has come to a close. In general, I've been rather busy. My weekend was a little crazy, and I'm glad it's over, even if it had many fun moments. I caught up with lots of different groups of friends and family. In my family we've had two babies born in May (both on May 1st, actually! And both of them girls!), so I got to meet the locally-born baby on Saturday for the first time. In June I'll meet the other baby, who is my niece. Can't wait for that! Anyway, I hope you all have had great weekends too, and are continuing in that vein for the remainder of your Sundays.

Now time for a creative update! What have I been up to lately? Well, I've got many varied goals for this year, one of which includes writing a new song each week. I had fallen behind with that during my recent travels, but I'm all caught up now (or I was last weekend, anyway...). I'm also well ahead of schedule with two of my other goals - the photo sorting and the revision of one WIP chapter per week. In most other areas, though, I'm either only just keeping up or am well behind. I'm not worried, as I know I can catch up. It's just not ideal being so far behind in some areas.

In other news, it's Sunday, and time for another Sunday Session! This last week, the song I've apparently listened to most has been the Smashing Pumpkins' b-side "French Movie Theme", a 1:51 song whose lyrics mainly consist of "Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah..." with the occasional "Bonjour!" thrown in. Genius lyrics, I tell you, but it's a pretty song and I love the bassline. Unfortunately there aren't any videos on YouTube of the proper version, only a demo in which somebody messes up the chords and Billy Corgan then proceeds to tell that person off for getting the chords wrong. "I can't believe you messed that up...!" Anyway, I think this week's results in the music listening game go to show that one can never tell what song is going to come out on top!

Some writing plans for the year...and a Sunday Session!

I haven't written much in here since May began, and it's actually been nice and relaxing. I set myself a goal this year of writing at least one blog post per week, and I've always achieved that. But of course with April being the A-Z month, things got a bit full on and I was writing a lot more than just once time a week! I will also be back to write tomorrow, to reflect on my personal A-Z challenge experience. It'll be fun to read other reflection posts too. For now, I am going to mention some other things that I've got planned for the rest of 2012.

First off, in June it's BuNoWriMo time (wow, that is next month), and I've got a plot chosen for that. I had 3 plots to choose from, two old ideas and one new one. I've gone with the new one, and I'm pretty excited about it. I would describe it as being about a "Disney princess gone wrong", but I guess that doesn't really tell you much. Which is probably preferable at this stage. ;) For want of any good tentative title at all, I'm referring to the project simply as "NIGHT". As I don't even know my character's names yet, I can't name it after any of them. As for the other ideas I was considering, I may use one of them for NaNoWriMo this November. I haven't decided whether or not I'll bother attempting one of the Camp NaNo months, but I'm thinking probably not. I've got more than enough work to be getting on with as it is, as you can see by checking out my Goals 2012 page!

Anyway...now that that's out of the way, I want to talk about music! It's been a while since my Sunday Session post, but to remind those who've forgotten (and to inform those who never knew), each Sunday I had been posting about the songs I'd been listening to most in the week just gone. This week (Sunday Session #10) the song I'm sharing is by a rather iconic Australian band called the Hoodoo Gurus. I saw these guys in concert last weekend, and in the days since, I've listened to this song a lot:

Just FYI, I also saw Fu Manchu and Black Cobra in concert last night - what a rockin' gig!

Weekly goals update, and some music

Some dot points, to start:

• With my goals this week, I've focused largely on revision, in order to try and catch up with NaNoEdMo. As a result, I've pulled really far ahead with my WIP revision, as you can see on my "task chart".
• My current WIP word count is 130,132, down from a ludicrous starting figure of about 146k. I'm finding it easy to cut out words (and by "words" I tend to mean "fluff I don't need in the least"), which this novel desperately needs. So I'm content with that.
• Many people would see this particular WIP revision as a bit of a time waster, since I'm not even sure I will ever try getting this thing published. But I'm not really doing it for that purpose; rather I'm doing it to tick an item off my very long creative to-do list.
• In just under a week's time, I leave for Paris and the U.K. and I'll be gone about a month. I will be updating during that time, mostly for the A-Z Challenge which is being pre-written and scheduled. But I'm not sure how much impromptu blog posting I'll get done.
• I haven't kept up very well with commenting on your blogs lately, but I fully intend to get better at that...starting tomorrow! Thank you for all your comments lately.
• I'm going to go and watch a bit of a movie after posting this. I will also enjoy an icy cold bottle of water (we're in the midst of a heat wave here at present, and I've never been a fan of those).

In other news, since it's Sunday (Session #9) I'm going to share with you the music I've listened to most in the past week. The songs on the list this week are:

• Foo Fighters, "Headwires"- one of my all-time favourite Foo songs and definitely a favourite from the There Is Nothing Left To Lose album.
• Boston, "More Than A Feeling" - timeless classic, what more need a girl say?
• Goo Goo Dolls, "Lazy Eye" - I'm not familiar with many Goo Goo Dolls songs, but I really love this one! I believe it's from a Batman soundtrack or something. I could find out more but I'm too lazy right now.
• The Cult, "Fire Woman" - yet more Cult, but I'm not sure one can ever have enough! This is a song that grew slowly on me. I now love it to bits.
• Roxy Music, "All I Want Is You" - this isn't a particular favourite out of all the songs I could've chosen by these guys, but oh well, it turned up!
• Zwan, "Glorious (Live)" - love this song, despite the fact that there's only a live version released so far!

A review of DORIAN GRAY, plus Sunday Sessions #8

For my book review this month, I've opted to talk about a classic I've only read for the first time this year - THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY by Oscar Wilde.

Last year, I wrote a short story for Chrysalis about a really creepy painting. I didn't realise at the time that DORIAN GRAY was also about a creepy painting. Somebody commented that part of my story reminded them of this classic novel. Having now read Wilde's classic work for myself, I can definitely see the parallels. And I can attest to the sheer creepiness of the original!

While this book no doubt has some deep meaning about gluttony and greed and how we should age gracefully, all I can really focus on is that totally messed up painting. I wasn't sure what to expect as the end of the story drew nearer. Would the painted image step off the canvas and start killing everybody? Would fleshly Dorian run off and kill his dear friend Harry? He seemed to be pretty into that sort of thing by then. So as not to spoil the ending, I will simply say that the ending wasn't a letdown!

To summarise, I'd call this a dark and seedy story of one man's slow but steady demise - his twisting from something almost angelic into something truly monstrous. I haven't quite decided whose fault his downfall was - his friend Harry for being such a bad influence, or himself for being so dangerously vain at his core? Thinking about it now, the story reminds me a little of Kirino's GROTESQUE, which I read last year. Only GROTESQUE was utterly littered with characters who went from good to oh so bad.

Sunday Session #8

It's Sunday, and time for me to share with you the music I've listened to most in the last week. It's been a continuation of the 'classic rock' slant this time around, with another tune from the Cult, but also a tune from Neil Young. I've been fortunate enough to see both these acts live in concert, all within the last few years. Long live rock!

Sunday Sessions #7 (and a brief goals/reading update)

Another Sunday is here, and so I'm going to share with you the music I've been listening to most in the past week. We have another tie, a three-way tie matter of fact, this week. The songs are:

• The Cult, "Love Removal Machine" - maaaaan I love this band. I've always got different favourites at any given time, but this is definitely a track that's always up there!
• Blue Öyster Cult, "Astronomy" - I was listening to this song one day while heading off to see a man about a skin cancer, and though I'd heard it before it was only this time that it struck me that I loved it. Particularly the ouuuutro.
• Aphex Twin, "Xtal" - this band is one that I've not yet managed to grow to completely love, probably due to their sometimes horribly creepy video clips (but if you want to write horror they're probably a good place to look. haha)...but this song is beautiful.

In other news, I finished reading a book about a library cat in Iowa (titled Dewey, you may have heard of it), and now I'm reading a Dave Grohl biography. What's with me and the non-fiction, you ask? Well, the cat book was thrust upon me by a work colleague, so I felt obligated (but I did love the book, don't worry), and the other (Davey boy) was a Christmas gift from my brother and his wife, sent all the way from North America, so again I felt obligated (luckily I totally love Dave Grohl).

Sunday Session #6 ... and SATC

It's Sunday, and time for me to share the songs I've listened to most in the last week. This week the number one position was taken by a song that was featured previously in session #4 - Catherine Wheel's "Salt". Definitely one of my all-time faves, but as it's already been featured I will skip to the runners-up this week instead (and yes, it's another tie):

• Catherine Wheel, "Texture" - from the same album as "Salt", and I'd have to say my favourite CW album of all of them!
• Weezer, "The World Has Turned And Left Me Here" - Weezer are sort of cute and dorky while at the same time being rather rockin'. I think this song sums that up nicely. Very fun lyrics, even though the song appears to be about being dumped.
• Cold, "Anatomy of a Tidal Wave" - I think I have heard about 3 songs by Cold, and I don't really know anything about the band. But I do know that I love this song!

Anyway, that's it for another Sunday Session! Now I want to mention that I just finished re-watching SEX AND THE CITY, the series, and it was one of those situations where you're compelled to keep watching just so you can get it over with and get back to "real life". I was compelled, of course, because I love the show, but I'm kind of glad my re-watch is done! Now I need to watch the movie again. And incidentally, I'm not a huge fan of the second movie, but I guess it had its moments.

Sunday Session #5, plus miscellany

Here we are again for a Sunday Session, in which I share what music I've listened to most this last week. And I will say that this week I've listened to a fair bit of new music, and yet the #1 I've been spinning (on iTunes and my iPod) is not new to me.




The song is "Eyesore", by a band called Women. I can't really remember how I found the song or the band, but I have a feeling it was by looking at "Similar Artists" on Last.fm (similar to who? I can't remember that either!). Last.fm for me is a great source of new music. There is just something about this song that I find magical. You have to listen to the whole song (yes, it's kind of long) to hear what I'm talking about. And it may well be just me, but I just love the outro to the song. It's gorgeous! Anyway, that's the song I listened to most this week, with a close runner up being from Tool.

Now, for the miscellany promised in this post's title:

• Although I haven't changed any of my blog settings, I suddenly cannot edit posts (etc.) directly from my blog's "front" face. I have to actually go into the Dashboard or the Design area and edit from there. It irritates me.
• My travels this year have been delayed by a week, cutting into my A-Z blogging challenge time even further than they were before. I'm going to have to pre-write and schedule my posts (and hope that Blogger doesn't mess with me). True to my pantser form, I prefer to write blog posts with very little (or no) prior planning. So this feels unnatural to me.
• I'm on track with my weekly goals, and yet every time I feel that I have the chance to get ahead, I slack off and squander the opportunity! At least I can say my procrastination skills are as finely honed as ever!
• My head cutty cutty-ness #2 is over and done with, my sutures are out and I feel mostly human again. But only mostly! hehe
• I reached 400 followers! Thank you so much everyone who follows my blog. I will say on this note that, in the early days of this blog, I wasn't aware that it was etiquette to follow everyone back that followed you (where it was possible to find their blog, at least)...so a lot of people who follow me may not have been followed in turn. If that's you, let me know and I shall endeavour to hunt you down (did that sound creepy?).
• For those who participated in the Critique my Blog blogfest, I haven't got around to all your blogs yet, but I will be doing so in the next little while. And thank you to all who gave me critique. I have implemented some changes as a result already, and intend to think about doing more as well.
• I like chocolate.

Sunday Session #4

It's Sunday, which means it's time for me to share with you guys the songs I've been listening to most over the last week. This week it's a tie again, but only between two songs. Well, really there are three, but one of them was featured in last week's session ("Shooting Shark"), so I'll just feature the remaining two:

These songs are from two of my favourite bands, Catherine Wheel and Alice in Chains. I discovered Catherine Wheel by accident one day when I was looking for a song by the Chicago band Catherine. Instead I downloaded Catherine Wheel's "Black Metallic", which remains one of my favourite songs today. From there, I acquired more of CW's stuff and they have currently reached #7 on my list of overall favourite bands (according to Last.fm).

As for Alice in Chains, well I discovered them after the Australian band Silverchair hosted the music show Rage one night, and played a selection of video clips from their favourite artists (Alice in Chains being one). The song "It Ain't Like That" is one I overlooked for years (since it's on an AIC album I also overlooked for years, Facelift), but in recent years has become one of my favourites. Alice in Chains are listed as #9 on my overall favourites list.

Sunday Session #3

Time for another Sunday Session, in which I share with you guys the music I've listened to most in the last week! Every week so far there's been some kind of tie for 'top spot'. This week is no exception, and there are eight songs to feature!

Commentary is at the bottom, but first, this week's songs are:

• Blue Öyster Cult, "Shooting Shark" - this is a lot more 80s than most of their stuff that I've heard, but I absolutely loooove it (new discovery) (and yes, I do love 80s stuff in general. hehe).
• Janet Jackson, "Velvet Rope" - a relatively recent (i.e. last year or two) discovery as well. Beautiful song, and the album is great too!
• Seam, "Sweet Pea" - a very rockin' alt. rock song, one of my all-time faves by this band, who I discovered by accident because my dad gave me a Seam CD he'd bought second hand and didn't want anymore.
• VAST, "Lost" - it took me so long to finally buy this VAST album (Visual Audio Sensory Theatre) but I am very glad I did, and this song is one of the reasons.
• Mylo, "In My Arms" - I do like the odd bit of dance music, and I can thank a dance-mad friend for introducing me to this guy & a few of his songs that I really like!
• Stabbing Westward, "When I’m Dead" - lovely depressing gothic-ness, I suppose. haha.
• Bullet For My Valentine, "Forever And Always" - this track seems to get a bit of flack from BFMV fans, but I like it! So there!
• Alice In Chains, "Private Hell" - this is from the "new" Alice in Chains, sans Layne Staley. I was a little bit doubtful, personally, about AIC continuing after Layne's tragic demise, but this song is an e.g. of how they're doing it right (in my opinion).

Sunday Session #2

Yessss, I'm back (I didn't forget!) for another Sunday Session. It is indeed Sunday, and it's 3:56 pm. That's about half an hour before I posted last week's session. But I'm going to get this post up and then head off to the beach for a good walk and then a refreshing swim (it's really hot here right now!!). Last week it was a tie between two Smashing Pumpkins songs. Well, this week it's a five-way tie!! Instead of posting all the videos at normal size, I'll put tiny little thumbnail links in for most of them, and a big one for the song I most wanted to highlight...

This week's songs are:

I had to add the Effigy video myself, since there are hardly any traces of that band around the interwebs and I really wanted to show off the song here on my blog. Effigy are a band from my hometown who never really got that far, despite releasing two albums and having a few successful singles. Their second album Century Collapsing (© 1995), which features "Rose Thorns", is for me a mixture of sheer brilliance and numerous "meh" moments. "Rose Thorns" is the absolute highlight for me, and reason enough to buy the album! They were well known for their lead singer's rather girly singing voice, and got a lot of flack for it. Personally that doesn't bother me, as the songs themselves are what I care about.

As for the other songs in this post, well I don't think they need much explanation (except "I Am One" I guess - it's the original version this time, from SP's debut album Gish). All these songs are the ones I've listened to most in the last 7 days!

Sunday Session #1

I saw another blog ages ago (sadly I think I've lost track of it) that did a Sunday Session every...well, Sunday! (makes sense right?) and I thought it was kind of a cool idea. Instead of doing a proper post on writing or whatever, I thought doing this would be a cool way of letting you guys know what kind of music I'm into. I'm a rather fanatical member of Last.fm, where you can see what music I'm listening to every day. I've decided to base the Sunday Session selection on whatever song I've listened to most in the past week.

This week I've actually got a tie, and the songs are both by my favourite band of all time, the Smashing Pumpkins. The first track is called "In My Body", and the second is an early recording of "I Am One" from their debut album. I'll tell you a bit more about each song below.

"In My Body" was released as part of the album Machina II/The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music. The Pumpkins, back in the year 2000, had released what was to be their last proper album for 7 years, Machina, but they also had more than another album's worth of material recorded which apparently their record label refused to let them release. So they decided to release it for free online instead!

This version of "I Am One" was recorded in the Reel Time Sessions, and was released on vinyl apparently. Also it was released on this mix CD I managed to grab a copy of from Amazon a few years back. That version was a really quiet mix, but this year (errr, I mean last year - 2011) when the Pumpkins released their remastered versions of Gish and Siamese Dream in some sublimely beautiful packages (yes, I own both, and still have not stopped drooling!), the Gish re-release contained a wonderfully remastered version. And that 2011 version is what you hear in the video above.
