Movie Monday #1 - IF I STAY & PREDESTINATION

I'll probably never post another Movie Monday post, but in case I do, I thought I'd make this #1.

This weekend just gone I saw two movies. I saw the first one because it was the $10 movie of the week (usually tickets cost $18.50 or more). It was IF I STAY (which I'd been looking out for for quite a while). I haven't read the book, though it's been on my TBR for ages. But I absolutely loved the movie. It was tragic, it was romantic, and it had a bunch of people sitting around a fire playing the Pumpkins' classic "Today", complete with cello.

Colour me totally sold on buying this on DVD when it comes out.

I also saw PREDESTINATION, which I had heard about from a colleague and really didn't want to see. But another colleague had free tickets, and she is always kind enough to share her freebies with me. So I knew I had to go. Still, I was grossed out by the very premise, and the movie itself didn't fail to give me that "ick" feeling. This movie was weird, and intriguing, I suppose, but there's no way I ever want to watch it again. ;)

Conclusions?
I will buy the IF I STAY soundtrack, and I will read the book someday soon
(which I planned to do anyway).
And as for PREDESTINATION, I will always remember it as the movie that got me to exclaim, "What the fuck?!" as the credits began to roll.

Write ... Edit ... Publish ~ ROMANCE (June)

It's that time of the month again when we participants in the WEP get together and share our thoughts on the monthly theme, set by Denise Covey. This month's theme is simply ROMANCE.

This time I'm sharing an excerpt from my novel SUNDOWN. As I mentioned last time, I'm happy to receive feedback. I know for sure that I tend to be one of those wordy writers, and I definitely welcome constructive criticism.

We move to the door and I turn to face him, realising with a jolt that he’s stepped really close. He towers over me with less than half a metre between us. He’s all darkness and shadow and on his face is a look of weariness so heavy it’s almost despair. I stare at him fixedly, unable to tear my gaze away.
“What?” he says, staring right back at me.
“You just…you look really tired.”
A slight twitch indicates something that was almost a smile. “Yeah. I am.”
“I hope you get a good sleep.”
“This is normal,” he says as if I haven’t spoken, gesturing to himself. “I mean, I’m always tired. I don’t get much sleep most nights.”
My face heats up at the thought of Jared Pearson trying to sleep. In bed. Or on couches, as the case may be. I’d really love to ask him about that—Why the couch? I bet there’s an awesome bed in the other room—but I’m too busy feeling for him. Sympathy, sadness, a fervent hope that tonight he sleeps soundly.
“Why are you staring at me?” he asks, his voice strangely husky. “Isn’t that meant to be rude or something?”
“God, I’m sorry. I’m going.”
And I’m just about to turn away when he steps fluidly toward me, reaches out his hands and takes mine. As he pulls me to him, excitement spikes inside me, and my purse drops to the floor. The closer he gets, the harder it is for me to breathe.
His hands trail upward, finding my face and framing it. He tilts it up toward him, his touch like fire on my skin. It draws a sharp, almost painful breath from me. My mouth falls open and I melt into him. He buries a hand in my hair, making my scalp tingle, gripping with his fingertips. The action sends sparks of pleasure all through me. His other hand trails down to rest against my neck, brushing my collarbone. I shiver almost violently and tilt my head back further.
Then he kisses me.
It starts out soft, a tentative brushing of his lips against mine. His mouth is warm, and then the kiss deepens and his mouth is hot. I’m still melting, but now I’m this hot puddle and I’m pretty sure he’s the one holding me upright. I lean against him and feel his heat, his hardness. My mouth opens further to let him in and I don’t know what the hell I’m doing but his hands are on my face and in my hair and his body is pressed against mine and it’s so warm and I can’t think any coherent thought anyway, so why bother trying?
His tongue flicks against mine and I twitch and make this weird soft sound. I try to remember being kissed like this ever. Steven is a good kisser, but this? Orestes was good, too, I remember. But even he wasn’t this.
Nobody’s ever been this.
I’m melded against him and my hands start to rise, they rest on his shoulders and squeeze. He pulls me even closer and I wonder if I’m feeling my own limbs or his. My hands trail down over his solid arms, drinking in his delicious warmth. It occurs to me that this is only the beginning; that there’s so much further to go.
With that thought, I wrap my arms around him, resting my palms against his back. I press hard to pull him closer into me.

Exploring THE 13th FLOOR with Christine Rains

EXPLORING THE 13th FLOOR ... a guest post from Christine Rains
If you're lucky enough, you may discover a secret floor that few others know exist. There's no number 13 on the elevator's pad. You'll have to go up through the stairwell to a landing where the light bulb always fizzles out. It's an old building; almost 100 years old. If the owners had any sense of pride, they could fix up the place and earn historical status. Thus the stairwell has a creepy old house feeling rather than the sterility of modern ones.

Likely the door to the 13th floor will be open. And if you're not paying attention, it'll open a bit more with a squeak. The corridor is warmly lit with fancy brass scones. No flourescent lights here. The carpet with its dark reds, blues, and greens reminds you of a ritzy hotel. Green is your favorite color. Is there more green in the carpet now? The walls are a rich hunter green too.

There are six apartments on this floor, but you don't hear anything. Perhaps no one is home. You shiver as a cold breeze brushes over you. Glancing behind you, you notice the stairwell door is closed, and when you turn around again, all the apartment doors are open. It can't hurt to take a peek, right?

The first thing you notice about #1301 is the coffee smell. You breathe in deeply as you poke your had inside. An old couch and a huge recliner dominate the living room area. There's a television, but not much else. No decorations or personal mementos. There's a flannel shirt draped over the back of the couch. Whomever lives there is a big guy.

College students probably live in #1302. Art students. There are paintings stacked everywhere. It's more than a bit messy. The second-hand furniture is mismatched, and there's a stack of comic books beside the couch.

#1303 is definitely a man's apartment. Modern with a color scheme of black, gray, and white. There are medieval banners on the walls. Interesting hobby for someone who's likely a professional of some sort.

You gasp as you peek at #1304. It's lushly decorated with a Victorian flair. The couch likely cost more than your car. Nevermind some of the art pieces. Someone left a light on in one of the bedrooms. Not a bedroom, a gigantic closet? It's full of shoes.

Two cats glare at you as you peer into #1305. It's a cozy place. Full bookshelves and comfy furniture with a patchwork quilt folded on one end of the couch. There's a pleasant herbal scent accompanying the feeling that you're visiting your grandmother's house.

#1306 is the last apartment, and strangely, the only one with no windows. Perhaps it was a storage room before it was rented out. It's small and colorless. There's a black leather chair and couch. Nothing else. Maybe it's still used to store stuff.

Weird how each of the apartment have different layouts. Stranger yet, you think you keep hearing a girl whispering nearby. Not willing to get caught poking around in people's apartments, you hurry down the corridor and back into the stairwell. The door shuts quietly behind you.

Mina Lobo's THAT FATAL KISS {book cover reveal!}

Today I'm thrilled to be helping out my bloggy friend, the very sassy Mina Lobo, in revealing the cover of her debut novel That Fatal Kiss. Congratulations, Mina, your cover rocks!!

Mina Lobo has long held a passion for Greek mythology. The story of the goddess Persephone's marriage-by-kidnap to Hades, Lord of the Underworld, has particularly fascinated her, and thus came about Mina's debut novel, That Fatal Kiss. Coming September 2013, the revisionist tale features a fiery and noble heroine, a handsome and broody hero, and some heated, earth-shakin' lovin'!

Given Mina's self-professed neurotic nature, it took her and cover artist Steven Novak a few go-arounds before settling on the cover design for That Fatal Kiss. It had to be curiously compelling, slightly spooky, and yet super sexy—and so it is!

The Book:

Feared by mortals for his inexorable power, and loathed by his fellow Greek gods for the same, Hades rules the Underworld alone. A stark eternity looms before him until he discovers Persephone. Struck by the youthful goddess’ beauty, kindness, and spirit, he must have her. But Hades believes Persephone could never love him, and so he conspires with his powerful brother, Zeus, to take her by force.

Persephone too seeks a mate but her possessive mother, the goddess Demeter, frustrates her husband hunting. Then Hades abducts Persephone, tearing her away from the Upperworld she loves to reign with him in the dank depths below. Though outraged, Persephone cannot deny the desire ignited within her by the dark lord’s touch. And even as she hopes that Demeter will unearth her, Persephone aches to surrender to the heat in Hades’ immortal soul.

The Teaser:
“Enough,” Hades said, closing the distance between them. “I have taken you with your father’s consent, as custom allows. You are in my kingdom, under my rule, and if you have any care for your continued well-being, you will get into my bed. Now.” And with the removal of the pins that held together the black cloth about his waist, he stood naked before her.

The anger warming Persephone clashed with another fire that roared to life within her. She choked on a breath and turned her face from him. “Be warned; I will resist you with the full force of my being, through violent means, if necessary.”

His large, unyielding hands encircled the soft flesh of her upper arms as he said, “If you must. Though your surrender to me would prove more satisfying to us both.”

The Author:

Mina Lobo has a lot of Scorpio action going on in her natal chart, which makes for a rather sybaritic and lust-driven Sagittarian. She aims for a wildly successful future as a writer of dark and whimsical romance while dodging the slings and arrows of her outrageous teenaged son, who's buggered off to college (hence the "Lite" in her Twitter handle, below). She enjoys comedic horror and alt rock, goth, & new wave music, as well as quality Belgian chocolates.

Mina invites you to keep abreast of updates regarding That Fatal Kiss, as well as the development of any new neuroses, by stalking her at her usual haunts:

Review : IF I LET YOU GO (Kyra Lennon)

I was one of the lucky folks who won an ARC of Kyra Lennon’s debut novella, IF I LET YOU GO. I finished reading it about a week ago, and loved it!

In my book (pun intended) this story had everything a girl could want: romance, humour and a steamy love scene. I loved the way the ‘accident’ between Madison and Dominic happened, and the immediate awkwardness of the aftermath. Kyra writes awkwardness really well, but she also does a mean job of writing steaminess. ;) I enjoyed her use of British slang throughout the novel. I also really appreciated that none of the characters were perfect, in fact far from it!

This is definitely a story with a happily ever after ending, but more one that I think of has “happily ever after for now at least”. Personally, I’m a big fan of those kinds of endings, which are far less cheesy than the other kind. I guess you could say I’m not really into the whole “every single little end was tied up and they got married and she was preggers by the last line” endings. I like a more realistic (yet still romantic) ending.

All in all, I thought this was a good great read! Kyra’s writing style is highly entertaining, and I really love her characters. I’ll leave you with some of my personal favourite quotes from this novella, which yes, I have already added to GoodReads:

Erica had asked me a million times. Madison, are you sure you’re just the child minder? He pays you a lot of money for doing hardly anything. Pushing aside the blatant insinuation that I was his weekend whore, I’d always told her the absolute truth. He’d never so much as looked at me inappropriately, let alone anything more.

I focused, rather embarrassingly, on his chest which was rising and falling slowly.
I left teeth marks!

His jaw was set, telling me I should back off. Unfortunately, being a gobby cow meant I couldn’t.

A-Z ... YOU DROPPED A BLONDE ON ME

Wow! Only one letter to go (after this one) until we're at the end, finally. Not quite there yet, but almost. In the meantime, it's Y-time! This year for the A-Z challenge, I've been featuring an A-Z list of books taken from my GoodReads to-read shelf. For today's "Y" book, I was tossing up between a Margaret Atwood book and this one, but in the end I chose...

Y

You Dropped a Blonde on Me (Ex Trophy Wives #1) - Dakota Cassidy

She was the perfect party-planning, haute-to-the max trophy wife. Now Maxine Cambridge is broke, unemployable and living with her mother and teenage son in a retirement village, with her self-esteem kicked to the curb.

Until her geeky former classmate Campbell Barker returns, all grown-up- and off-the-scale smokin' hot. Campbell refuses to believe Max isn't that smart, funny girl he's crushed on since high school. The more Max tries to show him he's wrong, the more she rediscovers her long-retired mojo. Now, she's ready to throw down some payback on her ex-life and fight for what she deserves...

Why do I want to read it? It sounds like it would be an entertaining, funny read. Plus, I do have a slight thing for hot geeks. ;)

A-Z ... PHANTOM WALTZ

For the A-Z challenge of 2012, I'm posting an A-Z list of books I haven't yet read but want to (titles taken from my TBR shelf at GoodReads). For my P book, I've chosen a book that a fellow blogger has mentioned numerous times on her blog (unfortunately I can't remember which blogger it was! I'm like that...). The book in question is...

P

Phantom Waltz - Catherine Anderson

With one glance, wealthy Crystal Falls, Oregon rancher, Ryan Kendrick falls hard - and fast - for lovely Bethany Coulter. A beguiling mix of sass and shyness, naivete and maturity, she shares his passion for horses, has a great sense of humor and can light up a room with her beautiful smile. She is absolutely perfect - in every way but one. A long ago barrel-racing accident has left Bethany confined to a wheelchair. In the years since, she has known both betrayal and heartbreak - and vowed never to open her heart to a man again. She has even accepted the possibility that she'll never be able to enjoy a healthy intimate relationship or have children of her own. But there's something about handsome Ryan Kendrick. Something that makes her believe she can overcome every obstacle. Something that makes her believe in lifelong, lasting love . . .

Why do I want to read it? Because it was (very) highly recommended, and I do love a good romance!
