Exploring THE 13th FLOOR with Christine Rains

EXPLORING THE 13th FLOOR ... a guest post from Christine Rains
If you're lucky enough, you may discover a secret floor that few others know exist. There's no number 13 on the elevator's pad. You'll have to go up through the stairwell to a landing where the light bulb always fizzles out. It's an old building; almost 100 years old. If the owners had any sense of pride, they could fix up the place and earn historical status. Thus the stairwell has a creepy old house feeling rather than the sterility of modern ones.

Likely the door to the 13th floor will be open. And if you're not paying attention, it'll open a bit more with a squeak. The corridor is warmly lit with fancy brass scones. No flourescent lights here. The carpet with its dark reds, blues, and greens reminds you of a ritzy hotel. Green is your favorite color. Is there more green in the carpet now? The walls are a rich hunter green too.

There are six apartments on this floor, but you don't hear anything. Perhaps no one is home. You shiver as a cold breeze brushes over you. Glancing behind you, you notice the stairwell door is closed, and when you turn around again, all the apartment doors are open. It can't hurt to take a peek, right?

The first thing you notice about #1301 is the coffee smell. You breathe in deeply as you poke your had inside. An old couch and a huge recliner dominate the living room area. There's a television, but not much else. No decorations or personal mementos. There's a flannel shirt draped over the back of the couch. Whomever lives there is a big guy.

College students probably live in #1302. Art students. There are paintings stacked everywhere. It's more than a bit messy. The second-hand furniture is mismatched, and there's a stack of comic books beside the couch.

#1303 is definitely a man's apartment. Modern with a color scheme of black, gray, and white. There are medieval banners on the walls. Interesting hobby for someone who's likely a professional of some sort.

You gasp as you peek at #1304. It's lushly decorated with a Victorian flair. The couch likely cost more than your car. Nevermind some of the art pieces. Someone left a light on in one of the bedrooms. Not a bedroom, a gigantic closet? It's full of shoes.

Two cats glare at you as you peer into #1305. It's a cozy place. Full bookshelves and comfy furniture with a patchwork quilt folded on one end of the couch. There's a pleasant herbal scent accompanying the feeling that you're visiting your grandmother's house.

#1306 is the last apartment, and strangely, the only one with no windows. Perhaps it was a storage room before it was rented out. It's small and colorless. There's a black leather chair and couch. Nothing else. Maybe it's still used to store stuff.

Weird how each of the apartment have different layouts. Stranger yet, you think you keep hearing a girl whispering nearby. Not willing to get caught poking around in people's apartments, you hurry down the corridor and back into the stairwell. The door shuts quietly behind you.

Cephalopod Coffeehouse - book club! (+ my birthday)

This month I'm going to cheat a little, since I haven't read any books in the last month that I have not already reviewed on my blog. So I will mention a book that I read back in June, that I never reviewed, instead (I need to learn to not include all my read books in my "mini-reviews" posts, or at the very least I need to learn to finish a new book in time for each month's Cephalopod Coffeehouse. ;) ) The book I'm going to mention today is Ali Cross's "Become" (Desolation #1), which I read and did really enjoy.

I thought this was a great read, and I will definitely pick up the next book in the series. I have to say I'm not hugely into angels and the teachings of the Bible, and this book obviously has a fair bit to do with both. Well, the Bible stuff isn't really that obvious but there's just a lot about sin and all that. I really do hate the idea that people who really don't do things that are all that bad (i.e. being alcoholic - yes, it's bad but it's not like it's murder or something) are candidates for a life in Hell. But that is really MOSTLY beside the point, and despite my aversion to all things Christianity-related when it comes to fiction, I was able to immensely enjoy this book. Particularly as it wasn't just Christianity but Norse myth as well that came into it. I do enjoy a bit of myth, as my history of university study will indicate. ;)

The story moved nice and quickly, and there was action around every corner. Desi is a kick-arse character and I definitely could envision breathtaking action scenes from a movie version of the story. I loved Michael and thought he was pretty hawt, all things considered. *waggle* And the supporting characters - Desi's version of the "Scooby-gang" as she referred to them - were cool to read about as well. I did think it was a bit funny that Buffy was referenced in a few places. The idea of Satan's daughter being pretty familiar with that TV series amused me. To be honest, when I read that part I actually went, "HUH?" and remembered that a while back I started re-watching Buffy and want to pick that up again.

Anyway, I would definitely recommend this book if you like kick-arse action with a fantasy/paranormal/whatever slant, and I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

In other news, yesterday I turned 33, and because I am a rabid Smashing Pumpkins fan and have for many years daydreamed of being able to say "Hey, I'm 33 too!" (no, really, I have), I thought I'd share this beautiful video that still makes me ache with its beauty (as does the beautiful song itself, which is featured on my favourite album of all time, incidentally), all these years later:

Rachel Hawkins's HEX HALL series

Last year I read my first Rachel Hawkins book, #1 in the Hex Hall series, and I loved it. I also wrote a tiny little review over at GoodReads that went a little bit like this:

Okay, so I read this one pretty quickly! It was an easy read, for sure. I LOVE the character of Sophie - she cracked me up on numerous occasions. I love her voice - witty and sarcastic. I also love that she said 'shitty'. I really liked Hawkins's writing too - it was clever and funny and well paced. I look forward to reading the next book, which I have yet to order. This is definitely a book I'd recommend for anyone who likes fun, easy-to-read and pretty light-hearted YA.

It took me until well over a year later to get around to reading book #2, and I loved this one just as much. Here is my review of #2 (hey, that rhymes), slightly abridged and amended:

I finally got my hands on DEMONGLASS and finished it the other day. I wasn't disappointed with this read - Hawkins's writing is as funny as ever, and the plotline moves along at a nice pace (plus it's cool). The ending is one great big cliffhanger. And...I don't have much else to say about this story, except that I really, really hope Sophie ends up with Cal, 'cause he is TEH HOTNESS and for some reason I just can't dig that Archer guy. Sophie needs a good bitch slap back into the reality that is Team Cal, I think. ;)

Have any of you read the Hex Hall books? What did you think? I personally found myself laughing - a lot - and turning pages pretty quickly. Maybe it's not literary, and maybe it has a love triangle (which I generally am not a huge fan of), but you know what? I don't remember seeing one single typo in either of these books, and the writing is fun and entertaining, and the characters are witty and cute (and sometimes evil). But now for my final question -

are you Team Archer or Team Cal?

p.s. I gotta get book #3!
