Cephalopod, Goals, & WRiTE CLUB 2014!

O.M.G., it is nearly June, and while this means BuNoWriMo for me and some other people, it also means the beginning of WRiTE CLUB 2014! This is a fabulous event that is DL Hammons's brainchild:

What is WRiTE CLUB?  It’s a modest writing competition whose inspiration was derived from the movie FIGHT CLUB.  There are numerous versions of this concept around the internet, but nothing like we do it here.  This unique approach, combined with your participation, continues to set it apart from the other writing competitions and is responsible for its phenomenal growth.  Its essence embodies simple, good-natured competition, with lots and lots of fun sprinkled on top.

WRiTE CLUB takes place over the span of eight weeks, with twice-weekly bouts whose winners will advance to the playoffs. In the end, there can only be one champion. And that champion will be determined by WRiTE CLUB readers! I think that's a big part of what makes this whole thing so cool.

So who will win in 2014? Will it be you? There's still a little time to sign up. Go here for more details.

I only read 3 books so far in May, though I am not far off finishing a 4th - Alex Cavanaugh's CassaStorm! I wish I was finished that one, so I could feature it, but as it is I will have to go with ...

After reading book one, I was sort of a bit torn about how to rate it. I was tempted to give it 3/5 stars, but to me it was more like 3.5. I did enjoy the read, and it made me want to definitely read books 2 & 3. But I thought it was a bit creepy that Sam as a wolf checked out Grace in her room naked, and basically stalked her for many years. I also found it odd that Grace was perfectly fine with this fact. Like she just shrugged it off.

The story  was intriguing, and personally I loved the setting - I want snow, damn it :( I think Stiefvater is a great writer, very skilled. But I guess the story itself didn't strike me as some gripping saga that goes beyond the romance of Sam and Grace. It has a bit of an epic reputation, and maybe that coloured my expectations.
I will conclude by saying I enjoyed the read, but I'm not sure I will revisit this book over and over again.

Ummm, not much to say this month except ... I'm ashamed!!

I hope to have a lot more than that to say by the time June is over. But for now, I really haven't done anything except finish editing the same chapter I was editing last time I updated. ;) But I haven't yet finished transcribing the edits back to Scrivener.

Hence my shame.

June is BuNoWriMo, so I will have the added push to do editing each and every day.
Bring on June, I say!

Over 'n out, folks. ;)

  1. June will be the month! And honestly, there is nothing wrong with editing something again and again. Better to be good than fast.

    1. Well, it's already going much better than May did. ha. But only because I am doing BuNo so have the added motivation. Maybe I should do a WriMo every single month of the year? :)

  2. Thanks to this post, I just joined the BuNoWriMo group on facebook. Maybe it'll help me get more written than I had planned in June. :)

Write Club- I entered. Fingers crossed.

Editing is important. Maybe that chapter will be the turning point in your writing career. No shame in perfection.

    1. Editing is definitely important. It can be demoralising when you can hardly see your printed out chapter because of all your edit scribbles, though. ;)

Yay, glad you joined the BuNo group. I will see you there. :)

  3. This is going to sound odd, but I actually feel relief when I read a not-so-glowing review of a hot book---makes me feel less guilty for not putting it on my to-read list, ha.

    1. I think sometimes those blockbuster books have had so much hype that you're inevitably going to be a tiny bit deflated after reading them. Sometimes they do live up to the hype, though.

  4. For me, a book that makes me want to read other books always gets a strong rating. So, even though this book wasn't overwhelming for you, I feel like the fact that you want to read the sequels is a good sign.

    1. Yeah, it definitely was a book that compelled me to read on. And I agree that's a very good sign for any book in a series.

  5. Hmmm, that book does sound a little creepy, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't read it. I am getting a little burned out on reading trilogies, though.

Oh, by the way, as an amateur radio operator, just thought I'd tell you what "Over and out" means. We say "over" when we're finished with a transmission, and are turning it over to another person to say his piece. We say "out" when we're leaving the frequency. So, in essence, "Over and out" means, "Go ahead and talk, but I ain't gonna listen." HA

    1. I quite love reading trilogies (or longer series), but I admit I do like to be able to move on to a new read more quickly, instead of being tied to one series for a whole month (as I was with this one, mostly).

  7. No worries! We all have shameful months. (I have four. :-P)

    1. They're kind of depressing ... but it's always good when you can pull yourself out of the hole & get active again.

  8. Don't be ashamed, we all have slower months. Besides, recharging your batteries is important too.

    1. Thanks. But I must admit that May wasn't so much slow as ... totally stalled. :) Thankfully June is already way better!

    Good luck with BuNoWriMo!

  10. Thank you for helping promote WRiTE CLUB! We demolished all of our previous submission totals this year and I hope that carries over into the voting phase! :)

    1. No worries, DL. I guess it's really taking off - though it always seems to do well, from what I can see.

      It's exciting. :)

  12. Yay for WRiTE CLUB. I'm happy it's June and that I almost have vacation time.

I only read Shiver, not the other books in the series, although I'd like to.

    1. I'm happy it's June as well, and for us here in Aus it's nearing tax time. I will soon have my student loans paid off. WOO!!!

  13. Sounds like June will be a busy month. I find editing takes much longer than writing, so don't be too hard on yourself.

    1. It sure does! I can easily spew out a new novel in 30 days, but the editing takes many months. Sometimes for only the first editing round. ;)

  14. Go, Write Club!
And go, you! We all have bad months. I think last year I had a bad four or five month stretch.
Don't worry, you are going to write your way out of it and into a finished novel!

    1. I do feel a bit like I've had a bad stretch for ... a few years now. haha. But then I remind myself I have achieved some seriously cool things in those years. It still doesn't feel like it used to, when I was insanely productive and disciplined.

      But thank you :)

  15. Editing is work, so you're doing well! Can't wait for write club. Sounds like it's going to be fun to read the entries.

    1. Editing sure is work! Way more work than the initial writing 'blurgh', for me anyway. ;)

Yeah, Write Club will be heaps of fun to witness!
