New Year's reading resolutions ~ blog hop

Today I'm excited to be participating in
Rachel Firasek's New Year's Reading Resolutions Blog Hop.
So without further ado, here I go!

2013 reads - my top 5

Species Imperative (Books 1-3) - Julie E. Czerneda

The War of the Worlds - H.G. Wells

Open Minds (Mindjack #1) - Susan Kaye Quinn

Bitter Like Orange Peel - Jessica Bell

True Grit - Charles Portis

There's quite a mixture of books in this collection, which I think sums up my reading habits pretty well - oh, and my writing habits too. Basically, I'm pretty much up for reading anything that gets thrown my way, regardless of genre (with some few exceptions). But it does take a pretty special book to garner 5 out of 5 stars from me.

2014 reading goals

In 2014:

  • I'm going to aim to read 40 books, which is a bit more than I aimed to read this year - but this year I read 49, while reading at a leisurely pace. I never aim to push myself when it comes to numbers of books to read in a year. I just like to make sure I am always reading something, and with the size of my TBR list that's never a problem
  • Also, looking back on 2013's reads, I realised I read quite a few that I just felt "meh" about. I'd like to read more mindblowing books in 2014. So I'll see how I go with that when the year's up. ;)

  1. I've read a lot of meh books too. I've gotten to the point that if I'm not taken with the book by half way in, I'll just read the last chapter and call it done. Too many books, too little time!

  2. I usually stop at about the third chapter on meh books.
Jessica will be stoked to see her book on the list!

  3. Read more mindblowing books - now there's a worthy goal!

  4. I read a lot of meh books last year, too. That's about all I could handle. I'm hoping I can do better this year. :)

  5. I'd like to read more intense YA books, as in the ones I already own but that are buried in my TBR pile or Kindle.

I stop at the beginning of meh books. I used to feel bad about it, but I no longer don't.

  6. Thank you so much for hopping. :) I'm hoping to hit my goal this year, but I'm off to a slow start! Best wishes!!!

  7. I don't have any specific books that I plan to read. I'm sort of reading the books that come my way lately--- a lot of library books and books that I catch when they are temporarily free/cheap ebooks, because I'm on a fixed income. I run across a lot of 'meh' books that way, but sometimes I find one that surprises me.

  8. Alex is right. I AM stoked to find my book on this list! THANK YOU!!!

I used to force myself to finish meh books. But lately I've realized time is too precious. I usually give a book 50 pages. I will VERY rarely stop before that. If it's longer than 250-300 pages, I will give it 100. I think all books deserve at least a little effort on the readers' part. :-P

  9. Good luck with this year's reading goals! I said I would read 50 books last year, but I failed miserably!

  10. I was quite pleased to have exceeded last years reading challenge too, 29 of 24 books. This year I'm aiming for at least 30 books, and like you I'd like more that really have an effect and make me think.
    Good luck for 2014!

  13. I stop if I get into the third chapter of a book and it feels meh. Or I MAJORLY skim to see what happens.

Happy New Year! I've never even heard of most of these books. Haha
