A-Z ... THE SILMARILLION

For this year's A-Z challenge, I'm posting an A-Z of books taken from my to-read shelf at GoodReads. For today's book starting with "S", I've chosen a work by a legend whose most famous other books I haven't yet read either...

S

The Silmarillion - J.R.R. Tolkien

The tales of The Silmarillion were the underlying inspiration and source of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writing; he worked on the book throughout his life but never brought it to a final form. Long preceding in its origins The Lord of the Rings, it is the story of the First Age of Tolkien's world, the ancient drama to which characters in The Lord of the Rings look back and in which some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part. (read more here)

Why do I want to read it? Well, gawwsh...why not? ;) I've read THE HOBBIT, and that's it. This is on my list, as well as The Lord of the Rings (nope, haven't read those either!).

    1. Well that's a pity 'cause who am I gonna tell what I think of all the next Catrina stories? hehe

yes I know it's an abomination, but I DO have the books on my shelf, ready to read...at some point. hehe

    2. I don't suppose you do audiobooks, by any chance? because if you want a really good version of the Lord of the Rings, the unabridged audiobook set by RecordedBooks is probably the best out there. The narrator sings all the songs, and does a great storyteller-British accent, and everything. :)

  2. You'll have to read LOTR first. Even though The Sil is first chronologically, you just can't read it unless you've read and loved LOTR. Because The Sil isn't like a novel. It reads more like a collection of myths. It's not an easy read by any means.

    Good luck!

    1. PK and Hope, this is one that I keep putting off as well...so many other books to read! ;) But it should take priority at some point...maybe even *this* year. gasp!

  5. I wasn't able to make it through Lord of the Rings until I had been playing Lord of the Rings Online for some amount of time. Picking up the lore and the scope of the world via the game helped make the books a lot more bearable to work through.

  6. I tried the Lord of the Rings as well as The Hobbit and couldn't finish either. I've recently decided that I will only marry someone who will read them out loud to me. XD

  7. I found The Silmarillion a dry read. Nothing like LotR or the Hobbit. I couldn't finish it.

  9. I haven't read anything by Tolkien either. I haven't even made it through the entire movie trilogy yet. I'm not overly interested in this genre, but hopefully I'll get around to reading some of LOTR someday---or at least watching the last film in the series.
