Cephalopod Coffeehouse & Do You Have Goals? [Aug.]

This month for Cephalopod, I've chosen a book that I've wanted to read for a long time now, but because I bought book #2 long before I bought book #1, it was an experience long delayed. I've read it now, and it's definitely book of the month for me. It's Confessions of an Angry Girl by Louise Rozett. My full Goodreads review is here, but I will try to summarise for the purposes of this blog hop below.

I seem to be going against the trend in giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. But I did stay up late a few nights to get it read, and on the last night I just HAD to finish it, or I would have been awake all night. For me, that's the mark of a 5-star read.
I've read some reviews on GR by people who hated Rose and wanted to punch her (the way she wants to punch many of the people she encounters in her life ;)).  But I didn't hate Rose, even if sometimes she was very far from perfect. She's one of those flawed characters, and I don't mean in the stereotypical "deep, dark, mysterious & damaged" way. I mean that she can be annoying, immature, and even outright mean, but she also comes to regret it. She's also not always physically perfect, like when she has a "zit crop" throbbing on her face. ;)
Even though I'm 34 and Rose is 14, going on 15, I could relate to her character in many ways. In high school, you could definitely say I was very "straight" and maybe a bit of a stick in the mud sometimes. I found it very hard to apologise when I had done something wrong, because it upset me so much to know I had hurt someone else. I also happened to have a friend just like Rose's bff Tracy. It was odd for me to read about the thoughtless things Tracy did, because THOSE THINGS HAPPENED TO ME! Right down to how Tracy makes Rose take one of her handbags out because her own bag is way too lame.
Anyway, those are some reasons why I loved this book. Another is that it has a totally hot dude in it. Which always helps me give a book at least one extra star. ;)

Last time I posted for this hop, I was finishing up a very productive July, but only musically productive. Since August began, I've been trying to get back into revision for SQUEAKY. And while I am experiencing another of those seriously pesky chapters that needs to be edited about a million times before I'm happy with it, I am getting those edits done.
Right now I am at the point where I want to edit the current chapter on the screen, and then print it out for one last proofing. The screen edit is key, because if I just print it out without doing that, I am pretty sure I'll end up with a printed chapter scribbled nearly to death once again. So that is my plan for this weekend - get the screen edit done, print it out, and hopefully after one last read-through, shove this chapter in the DONE file.
I already have the next chapter printed out (admittedly I've had it printed out for a long while now, gathering dust), so I want to get this one done so I can finally get to that.

P.S. On the topic of music, I created a bandcamp page for
my band Woody's A Girl, and you can check it out HERE.
The usual 4 songs (singles we released) are downloadable
for free, as the minimum cost is $0.00. They are
"Yes, New Loving", "Fall on Death", "Adventures" and "Song".

  1. I often like characters who aren't easy to love so I'll be checking this one out. Thanks!

  2. Productivity is productivity, musically or not. And kudos to the editing! At least you are editing--I'm doing everything I can to avoid it. (Yes, I'm even exercising. xD)

I'm embarrassed to say I don't think I've figured out how to edit EDIT. Still a work in progress there...

I tend to print out the whole MS and read through, and in a separate notebook scribble down what I would like edited. I'm not sure it always works, but I like it just the same.

I might try your method though, to save on paper. I can't keep printing out different stages of revision. I think I owe it to the trees and our environment. ;)

Looking forward to reading on the progress come September!

BTW, kinda off topic but how long does it take you to write a song? I really liked the lyrics (the verses) for 'Fall on Death'.

    1. I tend to do my first edit on the computer, going from rough (1st) draft to 2nd draft. Then after that I may read through again, or I may edit as a print-out. Thing is, sometimes it takes me up to 5 rounds of editing to get the actual story itself how I want it ... let alone the quality of the writing. :P

And I am impressed by the lengths you've gone to to avoid editing - exercising?!?! :)

  4. Edits take up so much time, don't they? I prefer to edit on a hardcopy too. Good luck!

    1. Yes, they do. Particularly when you are as unmotivated in practise as I am right now.

    1. If you like slightly more 'edgy' YA that doesn't have a Mary-Sue main character, I recommend it. :)

  6. That is definitely the mark of a good book! If I can't sleep for want of reading, I usually end up giving it five stars too. :) Have a terrific weekend.

    1. Yeah, sadly it doesn't happen REALLY often (though probably not so sad in terms of avoiding sleep deprivation :D ) but when it does, I know I've found something special (to me).

    1. No worries, Morgan - glad you enjoyed the review. :D

As for rocking the edits, not sure about that ... haha. But I am at least feeling good about my writing in general!

  8. Sounds like you found a good book to enjoy. :)
I hate when I buy a book, only to learn that it's the second in a series, and that I don't have the first. Drives me nuts.

    1. Yeah, I've done it a few times. Once I actually bought a book that was book #6 in a series! :P

  9. ! I didn't realize you had a post this month. If I might take the liberty of adding your link to the list, and... done.

A book that keeps you awake at night is definitely a good read!

    1. Oh crap! Sorry I forgot to include my link. :P At least I did the most important part and put my post up, though. hehe. Thanks for adding my link.

Now I've finished reading book #2 as well, and there aren't any more released yet. :( It's going to be a frustrating wait!!

  10. I think a book that comes alive enough to make people feel so strongly about the characters is a definite five star book.

I like to print my stuff out too. Mistakes are easier to catch in print than on the screen.

    1. Definitely! Printing out is a must for proof reading.

I don't get why people give low ratings to great books that have characters that annoyed them. That's not the reason to give a low rating. The reason would be if the book was plain crap :P

  11. Enjoyed the music. Personally, it's been too long since I've read a book that I had to finish that didn't involve prior obligations. I miss those books. Cam here for the goal blog hop, so good luck.

    1. It is nice to be able to just browse my shelves (or my Kindle) and randomly decide what to read next!

  12. You're making me curious about that book ;-) Have a lovely week.

  13. It's funny--those flawed characters are so much more interesting, but some people just can't take them. I like them, and I think that 14-15 age range just HAS a ton of them--it is a very self-centered age. Best of luck on your revisions!!!

    1. Yup, I prefer a character who isn't perfect, for sure. And one that I can admire all the more for gaining life wisdom along the way. :)

  14. You've made me curious about this book because I haven't heard of it, but I was also a very straight arrow in school and there were many times people's thoughtlessness hurt me. I'm wondering if I would similarly relate.
