It's time for another of Alex J. Cavanaugh's blogfests, and this time we're talking movies, music and books - our favourite genres in each. Plus we get to nominate a guilty pleasure for one of these categories. ;) Here are my favourite genres:
Movies
- Sci-fi/action combos - We just saw the remake of Total Recall, and although it had its bad sides (no Mars?!? No probe removed by nostril?) it was all in all a great remake. Also, I love the dystopian aspect of a lot of sci-fi, a.k.a. one of my fave movies of all time, Blade Runner.
Music
- Grunge/alt rock - This genre is definitely my main musical passion. When I first heard Nirvana's Nevermind, my life changed forever, and I haven't looked back. I love all sorts of other genres, and I have to say that probably my favourite genre after grunge/alt. rock is metal (particularly inspirational for dark stories, if you're listening to doom or gothic metal anyway), but at the heart of everything is and always will be my absolute love of grunge/alt. rock.
Books
- Fantasy - I guess this still has to be considered my favourite, because it's had such a massive impact on my life. Nowadays I don't read (or write) a whole heap of fantasy, having branched out into all sorts of other genres, but fantasy is still the genre that has had the greatest impact on me.
My Guilty Pleasure
- R&B/pop - I decided to go with a guilty pleasure in music, though honestly I'm not as embarrassed about it as I probably should be. R&B/pop isn't really that embarrassing, I don't think, but let me illustrate what I really mean by naming one artist that I love to pieces - Mariah Carey.
Fantasy affects me in the same way. It's the only genre that turns me upside down.
ReplyDeleteYay for Alex's blogfest!
I'm the same with fantasy too, though my addiction with it is pretty much exclusive. ^_^
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fantasy book fan as well. It has a special spot in my heart:) There's something about being able to get lost in a different world. Love it!
ReplyDeleteOkay, Mariah Carey counts as a guilty pleasure-- or just guilt by association...lol. You're a very busy blogfester this month!
ReplyDeleteYou're right, she does...and yet I'm oddly unashamed ;)
DeleteI read fantasy constantly when I was in high school and my early twenties, and then just kind of stopped. I'm not sure why, either. I started reading mysteries, I guess. I've read different Urban Fantasy in the last several years, but haven't been able to reengage with straight fantasy. It makes me kind of sad!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the Total Recall remake, but yeah, it would be weird without those scenes. And Blade Runner is a fav of mine too. Go Grunge :)
ReplyDelete.......dhole
your picks are in sync with mine, until mariah where the record scratches to a halt (ha!)
ReplyDeletei loved her as a kid when pop was my fave, and she's still awesome, but... =)
I remember the days of grunge metal. My best friend lived in Seattle at the time, and the music scene was so fun at the time.
ReplyDeletecool list!
ReplyDeleteI like your choices for the first three! Very similar to mine. And fantasy is what launched my desire to write, so it always has a special place in my heart.
ReplyDeleteThanks for participating in my blogfest!
I haven't seen the new Total Recall yet, so I'm trying to wrap my head around "No Mars." That just seems wrong. I hardly ever go see movies in the theater anymore, so I'll just have to wait until it arrives on Netflix to see how they handle that.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about your favorite genres,
Jocelyn
Love alt and grunge!
ReplyDeleteLove fantasy books!
ReplyDeletegrunge wasn't around long enough... it will make it's comeback just like hair bands or glam rock.

Howlin' Wolf Records: On-Line Magazine
I've never listed to grunge rock, but I do like some of the old heavy metal:) You shouldn't feel too guilty at Mariah Carey - she is talented:)
ReplyDeleteI like the fact you use slashes so you can kinda get two choices in the categories. It IS hard to choose just one, huh? It was so much fun to read about your favorite things. Great blog hop! :-)
ReplyDeleteLove sci-fi and I've been thinking about seeing the Total Recall remake. Glad to get a thumbs up on it.
ReplyDeleteI never expected to see Blade Runner, but that's an amazing movie, used to teach it at school in the day. I was reminded by someone that the Thorn Birds should have been on my list. Well, if Alex has said favourite mini series that's where I'd put Thorn Birds. A masterpiece.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy good Sci-Fi, especially stuff like "Alien" and "Prometheus." I watched "Total recall" last week and gave it 2 stars. The SFX and special effects overshadowed the story and diverted from the original. Bleeee.
ReplyDeleteI am also a rocker but go back further than Nirvana. I still have that CD, but I think it has been worn out. Classic stuff.
By the way, new follower!
I enjoyed the remake of Total Recall, although I wasn't a huge fan of the first one. You can blame that on the the actor though. :)
ReplyDeleteYep, fantasy definitely had the most impact on me as well.
ReplyDeleteHey, Trish,
ReplyDeleteR&B pop is awesome... enjoy it! I WILL NEVER forget playing my first CD ever, It was when I had just bought my first Super expensive AIWA system back in 1989 ($750 bucks! INSANE at the time) AND I blasted Mariah Carey's VISION OF LOVE! I will never forget it. AWESOME song. She has AMAZING range.
Yay... FANTASY. Try to read more. it is amazing to read.
Love your guilty pleasure. My husband is the one that finds all these hilarious mainstream songs that i'd never download on my own, but still manage to get onto my running playlists...
ReplyDeleteBlade Runner and Nevermind, such great choices! I was into the whole Seattle grunge scene.
ReplyDeleteGreat list! Excellent choices.
ReplyDeleteLove me some alt rock too!
Thanks for sharing.
Heather
I haven't seen 'Total Recall' yet. It would have to be very good to beat the ordinal. Arnie was just such perfect casting.
ReplyDeleteMariah Carey has a beautiful voice . . .I'm not sure I'd feel guilty about listening to her music ever. Fantasy is one of my faves for reading too, although I definitely read other genres. I haven't seen Total Recall yet . . .I just thought I would miss that Schwazenegger swagger.
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing wrong with Mariah Carey's music. Now...movies with her in them are another story. ;-p
