My kitty cat

Smog, a cheeky and cherished kitty. 2008 - 2017

I lost my beautiful kitty last week. It's been a pretty horrible week but time waits for no woman, so I've had to "get back on the horse" in terms of going to work each day and getting through the day. Still, it's not really getting any easier. I miss my naughty boy.

Just today when thinking about updating this blog, I was reminded of this below average quality poem I wrote in 2005 after losing my childhood kitty (she got to age 18 though, unlike my boy above who was only 9). I thought I'd share the poem:

Back in your box - 11/8/2005
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Baby in a box
You touched her hand so tenderly
Tentatively
You knew not where you went
But you felt safe enough to return her gesture of kindness

A little one
Left alone at such a young age
Your sister gone
Who knows who had the better fortune
You or her
But we all know you had great fortune indeed

My little one
A face I cannot imagine forgetting
But I bet the image will fade in time

I think I need another thousand photos
To remember you by
Before we put you back in your box
And bury you

Anyway...my plan is to make a big photo book of my boy's life, to remember him by. I'm not really the type to bring ashes home, and don't have much room to bury pets in my back yard (it's mostly paved). So I will have to hang onto his collar and paw print given by the vet, even though it totally does not look like the Smoggy paws I knew so well. I will have to flip through his photo book once I have that done, and hang onto his memory.

Kyra Lennon's "Letting Go" bloghop

Today is the "Letting Go" bloghop, hosted by Kyra Lennon in celebration of the release of her novella If I Let You Go. Originally this little story was going to be released today, but because she and the rest of us couldn't wait, she brought the release date forward a bit. You can read more about Kyra's writing over at her blog on the "My Books" page.

Here are the rules for this bloghop:

"On October 22nd, I invite you to share some stories about letting go. Was there a time when you had to let go of someone or something? How did it make you feel? How did you handle it? Or if that's too personal - which I completely understand - how about writing a piece of flash fiction?
The only rules are - obviously - it has to be related to letting go, and please keep it to a maximum of 500 words." - Kyra Lennon

And here's my contribution:

Your wind-down windows RSI-d me
Just like that ‘old skool’ steering wheel
In cursed summer we boiled together
And climbing hills was pretty tough

I called you Little One, ‘so tiny!’
My first car that I bought myself
You did me proud, my little bubby
And only with a tear did I let you go

That was a day I said hello
To a brand spankin’ new Yaris, yo
In 2009, yes, a while ago now
A truly emotional moment in time!

And though I love my auto windows
My awesome air-con/power steering
I often think of you and wonder
Just what you are doing now

Maybe you are all around me
On scrap heaps near and far, but
I like to think you’re doing better
My blue-green friend out in the world

In closing, yes, this poem’s crappy
But I know you don’t care!

And now it's time for me to share my poem! It is in fact an older poem, and one that's been converted into a song, which you can hear/download for free here.

"Xerxes"

Where there is a will
There is a way
My will is strong
The way will follow

Lots of talk
And a lot of action
This I promise
There's no forgetting me

I'm going in
I'm searching for the key
I'll open your door
I'll find you

Little boy lost
You're hiding away
You can't live that way
No you can't live that way

Lots of kissing
Lots of tumbling
Push you up against the wall
No you won't forget me

I'm going in
I'm searching for the key
I'll open your door
I'll find you

1st Crusader challenge!

Yes indeed, the time has arrived for the first Crusader challenge, and you can read all about it here.

Below is my entry for the challenge, a poem I like to call...

A Blade of Fuliguline Grass Makes For A Bloviate Rabbit

Maybe I was a rabbit once

Or something like a duck

I hopped through blades of glass

Fuliguline in my way

But this time I’m a librarian

And I’m not shy at all—no way!

Yet with words I tend to bloviate

Beyond what I can explain

Yes, indeed, you’ll probably find

My word counts are too high

But I’m the more self-confident type

The voices won’t turn me aside

P.S. I rescue baby rats from my cats

And I clear my driveway of snails

I talk to the ants before I grab the spray

And hope they’ll run away

Sometimes I chew on my nails till they break

And my sentences might stretch very far away...............................

Ahem.

It’s time to finish this poem

And put it on my blog

And then I’m going out into the stacks
And putting my iPod on.

The End

I have revealed something about myself in this poem that isn’t strictly true - can you guess what it is?

This was a lot of fun to write. I have written a lot of poetry in my time, but lately it's been mostly for songs, and it's been a while since I wrote a silly poem. :D Anyway...look forward to reading others' entries for this challenge! :) And I have yet to follow everyone. *sags wearily*
