CAN'T GET ENOUGH GAMES - Christine Rains

Today I'm featuring Christine Rains for her Geeky Dice & Debauchery tour. Christine, it's awesome to have you! I love geeky things, and debauchery's not too bad either. ;)

I love playing games. Any kind. You name it. Well, except mind games. I only write about those!

Today I'm going to let my inner geek out to play and share with you my favorite games. I'd love for you to comment with your favorite games and maybe point to some new fun ones.

BOARD GAME: Settlers of Catan.You have just arrived on a new island. It's a race to collect resources and your settlements and cities before everyone else. It's fun and easy. It takes some strategy, but you're at the mercy of the dice. Do you have wood for sheep?

Trisha's interjection: I really just love Monopoly, but I also love Pictionary. But I also love Cluedo. But maybe I love Trivial Pursuit!! BUT of course I love Scrabble. ;)

CARD GAME: Cards Against Humanity.This is how the game is advertized: “Cards Against Humanity is a party game for horrible people.” And it's absolutely hilarious. Not a game for children or those with clean minds! Every time we've played this with friends, we laughed so hard we cried.

Trisha's interjection: I grew up playing cards, and one of my favourite games is one that my aunty refers to as "Mucky Liz" (named after the Queen of Spades which is a key card in the game ;) ). But my all-time fave game is 'Carioca' (pronounced 'karaoke', by the girl who taught us the game, my Argentinian high school friend). This is a game that has a set number of rounds, but we went beyond those rounds until we each held almost an entire deck of cards in our 'hand'. Prepare for hand cramps!!

VIDEO GAME: Final Fantasy Tactics.
I'm a huge fan of Square Enix's Final Fantasy series, but having to pick just one of the whole lot, it's the original Tactics. I've played it at least thirty or forty times. It's not as graphically pretty as some of the more recent games, but I love strategy games.

Trisha's interjection: I just can't let go of my Super NES (even though I threw it out years ago because it had long before that stopped working). But I can't move on to any other game console. I love my Super NES, and I LOVE Donkey Kong Country. Not just the game itself, but the soundtrack. ;) I have the .mp3s.

ROLEPLAYING GAME: Dungeons & Dragons.
I'm a stereotypical geek here. I love losing myself in a medieval world of magic and dragons. I've played hundreds of hours. Solo quests, with small adventuring parties, and with huge groups in massive battles. Oh, which edition is my favorite? I've played 3rd the most, but I really like Pathfinder (3.5). I'm not fond of 4th edition, and I have yet to play 5th.

Trisha's interjection: I have to confess I haven't really done any 'live action' roleplaying, but I have been involved for many years in a written roleplay community inspired by Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time book series. I have found some of the most amazing friends a girl could ever have through Dragonmount.com. So yeah, that's what I've done in terms of Roleplay. All Wheel of Time stuff. :)

Today I am excited to be interviewing the two main characters from Reborn, Yssa and her at-times-exasperating boy toy Liam. ;) I hope you enjoy the interview!

Do you guys have nicknames?
Yssa: My name is actually my great-grandmother Claryssa’s nickname, although a lot of people call me Prophetess, as part of my title—Phoenix Prophetess.

Liam: No, no nickname here.

Where's your homeland/town, and what's your favourite thing about it?
Yssa: I was born on the Island of Mournia, but I lived most of my childhood on the Island of Guntas. My favorite thing about Mournia is the spring nymph Babia. She’s a delight to talk to and so pretty. My favorite thing about Guntas is spending time with Tamman’s priests.

Liam: I was born on at the Place of Lordéhi, but I often consider the City of Amora just as much as home as Apenth’s temple. My favorite part about the Place of Lordéhi is swimming within Lordéhi River and swinging from the willow trees into the water. I find Amora beautiful as dawn coats the white buildings in pinks and golds.

What's your favourite season of the year?
Yssa: Winter.

Liam: Summer.

Favourite time of day?
Yssa: Night.

Liam: Dawn.

Liam, what's the most annoying thing about Yssa?
*Leans closer* She can be a bit of a know-it-all, even when she doesn’t foresee what will happen. She’s also a bit too headstrong for her own good.

Yssa, anything really annoying about Liam?
Everything! *laughs* Okay, he might be all right, but I hate how he sometimes acts like he’s better than others, and he can be a tad jealous at times.

And now, each of you, what's the BEST thing about each other?
Liam: I love the way she’ll drop everything to change a person’s fate.

Yssa: The best thing about Liam is his dedication to his training. He’s a hard worker.

What is your biggest fear?
Liam: Losing Yssa.

Yssa: People, in general. I never know how they’ll react around me.

To you, what is the most important trait for another person to have?
Yssa: Courage.

Liam: I’m with Yssa on this one.

What's your favourite food and favourite drink?
Yssa: The woodwoses’ mead, even though I shouldn’t drink it, is my favorite drink, since it can help me forget who I am. As for food, I love fresh-made bread.

Liam: I love fish, and for drink, I enjoy plain ol’ water.

“Hermes is so immature. He lacks a certain authority. While occasionally amusing, I find his ceaseless tricks and jests belie a rather spiteful sort of nature. I find it difficult to consider him marriageable when he is constantly in search of some frivolous amusement or other. He is handsome enough, in his way…”  Persephone wrinkled her nose. “But, no. I want someone with whom I may share lighter moments, to be sure, but also someone who can turn his mind to more serious matters, someone who is capable of intelligent discourse.”

Athena thought again before suggesting, “Then what of Eros? He certainly is pleasing enough to look at and has all of those qualities you admire.”

“Yes, he is an excellent candidate,” Persephone said. “Unfortunately, I find him more suitable for the role of confidante than that of husband.” At Athena’s perplexed look, Persephone elaborated, “I regret to say that I feel no particular yearnings in his direction.”

“Ah!” the elder goddess exclaimed, in the tone of one who had finally come to the heart of a matter. “So you seek a male of authority, wisdom, depth and beauty, as well as one who can stoke your—ahem—internal fires. Well, that seems reasonable enough. Alas, I cannot think of a name to fit such a tall order.” But even as the Warrior Goddess uttered those words, her eyes widened and she became completely still.

The above excerpt comes from the second chapter of my fantasy romance, That Fatal Kiss, set in a mythical Greece. In this segment, Persephone's laying out for Athena what she wants in a mate. In this era, we call those "deal-breakers," right? These are the desirable qualities a person must possess before a more serious connection can be considered (or the undesirable qualities that will "break the deal" if they do exist). Poor Persephone hasn't had much luck finding a fella who fulfills her criteria, but Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, may have thought up just the right guy...too bad the right guy went about hooking up with Persephone in totally the wrong way. (Totally.)

About a year ago, I thought about what my deal-breakers were and came up with a list of things (incomplete, probably) that I don't want in a partner. To wit, I'm not interested in tying the knot with a dude who:

• Likes hot weather
• Prefers Pepsi products to Coke
• Is a political extremist
• Is a religious extremist
• Prefers white wine to red
• Prefers cats to dogs
• Is cantankerous
• Doesn't enjoy the absurdities in/of life as I do
• Doesn't enjoy my eccentricities
• Is a sheep (follows the mob)
• Isn't naturally compassionate
• Is a racist, or any other bad -ist
• Thinks the poor and unfortunate brought their conditions upon themselves

I do chuckle a bit when I look at this list (though I am completely serious about the white wine thing), but, you know, you gotta go with what feels right to you, eh?

POP TRAVEL tour - Tara Tyler on Disney! :)

Today I'm excited to have Tara Tyler here on my blog during her Pop Travel book tour (wooo!). Even more wooooo! is that she's here to talk about Disney, which is one of my favourite topics. I've only ever visited Disneyland in Los Angeles, but I've been there twice now and loved it. I also am a big fan of Disney movies, from the older classics to the newer releases. So, on that note, take it away Tara!

Today, I get to talk about one of my favorite places, Disney!

Living in Florida for many years, we went to Disney World all the time. (Anyone remember riding rides with tickets? ha!) We had field trips, weekends, even our senior class trip was there – Grad Night for Seniors who got to roam the park from dusk to dawn. I wrote some Disney posts a couple years ago, but tho fun to write, they were time consuming. Now, I will hit some highlights!

My biggest piece of Disney advice, PLAN AHEAD!

• Reserve a room – staying at the resort you get some perks:
• magic hours – get in early, stay later at specified parks
• transportation – no driving necessary, take a bus, a monorail or a boat
• the pools & water sport – themed and clean
• cafés and restaurants – some with characters, and great for dining plan
• Reserve meals – if you don't, you will be waiting and waiting and waiting
• Know what parks and rides you'd like to visit. Cost efficient for ticket purchasing, helpful for reserving meals at the parks, and get those fast passes!
• Best times to go are during school (Jan, May, Sept-Nov). The worst times to go because it's the most crowded, and therefore the most expensive… I'd advise against going:
• Christmastime
• Thanksgiving week
• Summer
• Spring Break (mid March - April)
• Mid Winter Break (Feb)

(early) March 2010 - less crowds, less waiting for a table

Hard to narrow down, but here are my top 5 rides (I'm not a thrill-seeker):

• Horizons (EPCOT)
• Toy Story (MGM)
• Star Tours (MGM) – revamped
• Peter Pan (Magic Kingdom)
• Haunted Mansion (Magic Kingdom)

Disney is expanding and improving all the time. On our next visit, I'm looking forward to visiting the latest addition of a new section in Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom.

Walt Disney loved to speculate about the future. EPCOT was originally designed to be a futuristic city (Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow) And that's my connection to Pop Travel – futuristic living and adventure! Ha! So if anyone has any Disney questions, I'd be happy to answer them!

Rachel Morgan's GUARDIAN (Creepy Hollow #1) - review

I'm not much of a book reviewer, though I do occasionally throw together a bunch of words to try and describe what a book means to me. This time I'm writing a review as part of a book tour - the very first I've ever participated in! It's exciting, especially because I got to review an awesome book (well, novelette) that I absolutely adored and would give 50 million stars to if I could. ;) That novelette is by Rachel Morgan and is the first in her Creepy Hollow series. To learn what the story's about, check out the Creepy Hollow website.

When I agreed to be part of Rachel's book tour, I didn't really know what I could expect. I'm not too familiar with Rachel's writing, except through her blog, so I was going in blindly (though the blurb had got my attention and interest!). Starting to read GUARDIAN, I was drawn in and delighted pretty much from the first word. First off, I'm a huge fan of first person present tense, which is how this story is told. I love Rachel's beautiful descriptions of the fae world (Can I please visit? Maybe stay a while?), and as I was reading I could already imagine the story as a gorgeously lush movie. Or maybe even a captivating TV show episode!

Not only is the writing beautiful, it's cute and quirky and funny too. Tora, Violet's boss (or mentor, maybe?), has an office lit by a squirming glow-worm on her ceiling! I want to go and pat the little wormy. After Vi leaves Tora's office (post lecture for breaking the two big rules), she finds Nate hanging out with a little tree sprite who giggles and pokes him in the face before fluttering away (CUTE!). People receive "fae text messages" (as I like to think of them) on little amber tablets instead of mobile phones. There are just endless moments of cuteness - the story is littered with them. But they're mentioned in passing, as a matter of course, so they don't draw you out of the story, they just kind of make it sparkle. The writing flows effortlessly, making for a quick and captivating read.

The dialogue is entertaining and realistic, two things I value highly in any story. For example, on page 6, Nate is surprised to learn that Violet's a faerie:

Nate: Aren't faeries supposed to be, like, really tiny? With wings and a wand and faerie dust?

Violet: I'm not Tinkerbell!

And as for plot, well, that part's just cool. It moves fast, drawing us swiftly into the action (and the romance. Which was another very very cute aspect of this story. I basically squeed when...ohh, well, why don't you read it and find out?), and we don't have any moments when we're rolling our eyes going, “Come on, get on with it already!” In short, this was a delightful read and I want to read more. NOW.
