NaNoWriMo 2012 - gulp, I've committed

My NaNo profile.
As usual, I've signed up for NaNoWriMo in November. Not quite as usual, I'm feeling a bit nervous about this year's challenge. I'm going to rewrite a novel I refer to simply as DAPHNE, or at least that's what I tell myself...and everyone else on the NaNoWriMo website. But I'm not all that familiar with doing rewrites. It's not my usual "thing".

This year, I did complete a rewrite and was very happy with the result. I am also currently working on a partial rewrite of that rewrite. So I know I can do it. I'm just nervous that I will start on this year's NaNo and lose my way.

Despite my decent track record with NaNoWriMo, I have been known to fail in the past. Twice. There was a third year when I didn't even participate at all, knowing that if I tried, I would fail miserably. But other than that, I've succeeded with NaNo every year since 2002. It's a tradition I fully intend to keep up, if I can help it.

Why am I nervous? Well, the first time I wrote DAPHNE, it took me 10 years!! I started it back in 1999, during my first year of university, and only finished it at the start of 2009, after a whole lot of years had passed and my life had changed drastically. I was a different person by the time I finally got it done.

Luckily, I do have a good, meaty general plan for my character Daphne. I'm just not sure how successful I'm going to be at writing out her revamped story. But I'll sure be giving it a good shot!

Are you doing NaNoWriMo this November?

  1. Nope, no Nano for me! I tried in July and failed. I've had people tell me that since I wrote anything I didn't fail. I know that I didn't accomplish what I set out to do, and so to me that was a failure. I don't feel bad calling it that, either. It's okay that it didn't work out. I don't think I'm a Nano kind of person. Now I know. You impress my socks off that you have completed Nano so many times. You're absolutely amazing!

  2. Oh, and good luck! I'm sure you will do fabulously and hit the other end of November with a complete and wonderful rewrite! :)

  3. Congratulations! You can do it. I did JuNoWriMo and was amazed at how much writing I was able to do when I had a goal in mind. It was hard, but well worth it.

    Good luck and have fun!

  6. Good luck with NaNo! I may have signed up - just in case I decide to have a crack at it, but I'm not sure just yet lol!

  7. Definitely not. If there's anything I've learned from attempting binge writing it's that I can't manage more than 500 words a day. So I think I'll just stick with that and write at my own pace, and at any time I feel like it. :-) good luck though!

  8. I'm doing it too; right now I'm planning to do a superhero story with Captain Happily Married. I thought about doing a Catrina story, but I think she's had enough novelling fun for a while. Good luck with your Nano! :)

  9. Congrats! That so exciting / scary to commit! I'm not doing it this year-- I'm hoping to be finished with the last 20,000 of my current MS by then, and spending the month revising. But I love to hear about everyone's progress who is doing it!

  10. Good luck with your rewrites during NaNo! I'm doing the same thing for NaNo this year--rewriting a novel, which happens to be the first one I wrote.

  12. I've signed up for my first time. I'm pretty nervous, especially reading how prepared other people are!

  13. Since 2002?! Holy cow! That's impressive! Even with a couple years you didn't make it. That is still 7 wins, yeah? I haven't yet committed to the full rewrites I have in my pile (there are 4 that need it, but it is just so much easier to address the smaller level editing needed in my later books) So I wish you a ton of luck!

    1. In a way it's similar for me, in that the rewrites of ancient projects are the ones I keep putting off. Because it's much easier to just write new, rough stuff. ;)

  14. Seven wins in ten years? That IS an achievement. I took part for the first time in 2010 and won, but due to personal issues I did not take part last year. But I'm back on for 2012. Will see you there. Good luck with the re-write!

  15. Good luck to you! I'm such a rebel, I'm doing my own nano thing, since there's no way I can get that word count in during November, but that doesn't mean you can't. Best of luck to you! :)

  16. Good for you! I couldn't wait until November to write my story (my characters wouldn't leave me alone). I should be finished well before NaNo. If I weren't committed to revisions, I'd try to write another MS. Alas, I think I'll stick with one project at a time. :)

  18. Sound like a good one to rewrite. I tried Nanowrimo several years ago. It was a month of odd disasters. One day ...

  19. Wow, I'm really impressed that you've done NaNo for so many years - that's amazing! Good luck with your rewrite this year!

I tried it in 2008 and crapped out about mid-month, I think. That is, I stopped way before 50K BUT found it a fun (if terrifying) exercise in "pantsing" my way through a story. And what I did create in those couple of weeks became the germ of a project I'm more than a bit in love with. I don't believe I'll be able to try again this year, because I'd like to retain just one thread of my sanity. At least. :-D
